Chapter 11 - What the Dome Remembered.

They reached Aurelia at three in the morning.

The restaurant was dark except for emergency lights and the glow from the city beyond the windows.

The manager let them into the antique storage room after Adrian threatened to buy the building and fire everyone if he did not.

Emma told him that was not helping.

Adrian apologized to the manager.

It was a small thing, but Emma noticed.

Rows of silver trays, porcelain dishes, decanters, and serving pieces filled the room.

A locked wooden cabinet stood at the back.

A brass plate read M.H. PRIVATE RESERVE.

The key from Eleanor had opened the cellar, not the cabinet.

Emma examined the silver dome.

Its hidden compartment was empty and damaged.

Then she noticed the handle.

The engraved leaves around the base formed a pattern identical to the family sign Eleanor had used for the wine cellar.

Emma twisted the handle counterclockwise.

It came loose.

Inside the hollow stem was a narrow strip of metal etched with six numbers.

Reed entered them into the cabinet lock.

The door opened.

Inside sat a single old wine bottle, a portable drive, and a handwritten note.

Adrian picked up the note.

It was addressed to him.

If you are reading this, you finally listened to someone other than your fear.

His eyes closed briefly.

Emma looked away.

Reed connected the drive to his laptop.

There were seven video files.

Each showed Eleanor seated in Dr. Kessler's office.

No interpreter was present.

Kessler spoke slowly and loudly as if volume could replace language.

Eleanor repeatedly signed that she did not understand his questions.

In one recording, Marcus entered and answered for her.

In another, Vanessa told Kessler that Eleanor was becoming paranoid.

The final video was different.

Eleanor had hidden a camera in her handbag.

Vanessa and Kessler remained in the office after she left.

Vanessa placed an envelope on his desk.

Kessler asked whether the board would accept his diagnosis.

Vanessa replied that Adrian would.

Adrian stared at the screen.

The sentence seemed to hit him physically.

Marcus had been right about one thing.

Adrian's fear had been the door.

The next file contained audio from a private dinner.

Marcus discussed transferring voting control of the Whitmore Foundation after Eleanor was declared incompetent.

Then Vanessa said something worse.

Once the trust moves, Adrian becomes irrelevant.

Emma looked at him.

“You weren't their partner.”

“No.”

“You were their shield.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“Not anymore.”

Reed checked the time.

They had less than four hours before the board meeting.

Then Emma's phone rang.

It was Noah.

She answered instantly.

Noah did not speak, but Emma heard someone breathing.

Then a man's voice came through the line.

“Bring the drive to the Halcyon service entrance.”

“If you call the police, your brother loses more than his hearing.”

The call ended.

Emma stared at the phone.

Adrian already understood from her face.

Emma asked why Eleanor had trusted a restaurant object with evidence this important.

Reed said Malcolm Whitmore had once owned Aurelia's building and used the private dining room for negotiations.

He believed the safest secret was one hidden inside something everyone touched but nobody examined.

Eleanor had kept the tradition alive.

The dome had passed through hundreds of hands over the years.

Only a person who listened to her instructions would ever learn that its handle was more than decoration.
