Chapter 13 - The Boardroom Without a Voice.

At 6:21 a.m., the top floor of Whitmore Tower was already locked down.

Marcus Hale had never reached police custody.

The officers called to the cellar had been diverted by a false emergency report, and Marcus had escaped through a maintenance tunnel before local police arrived.

Now his name appeared on the digital boardroom agenda as acting chief executive officer.

Vanessa had not been the only person planning ahead.

Adrian, Emma, Reed, and Noah entered through a service elevator using a security credential Adrian had never surrendered.

They could hear raised voices beyond the boardroom doors.

Inside, twelve directors sat around a long black table.

Marcus stood at the head.

Vanessa sat beside him as if the loading-dock confrontation had never happened.

Dr. Kessler was nowhere to be seen.

A screen displayed a medical declaration naming Eleanor Whitmore permanently incapable of managing her affairs.

Marcus stopped speaking when Adrian entered.

“You are not authorized to participate.”

Adrian walked forward.

“I own twenty-two percent of this company.”

“Not if the trust votes to suspend your shares during a criminal review.”

Reed placed a folder on the table.

“Then the board should review evidence of fraud before it votes.”

Marcus barely glanced at it.

“Evidence stolen by a waitress who is under police investigation?”

Several directors looked at Emma.

She felt their judgment immediately.

Vanessa smiled.

“This is exactly why vulnerable people need protection from opportunists.”

Noah signed something beside Emma.

She almost smiled.

He says your face makes him understand why hearing people invented muting.

Emma did not translate.

A director asked where Eleanor was.

Marcus answered smoothly.

“Hospitalized and unable to communicate reliably.”

The boardroom doors opened again.

Every person turned.

Eleanor Whitmore walked in.

She wore the same dark gray dress from the gala beneath a heavy coat.

A hospital identification band still circled her wrist.

Behind her came a nurse and two police detectives.

Adrian's mouth fell open.

“Grandmother.”

Eleanor ignored him.

She took the empty chair at the opposite end of the table.

Marcus recovered first.

“Mrs. Whitmore, you should not be here.”

Eleanor signed.

Emma stepped beside her.

“She says that sentence is getting boring.”

A few directors shifted uncomfortably.

Eleanor continued.

Emma translated every word.

“She says she is fully competent.”

“She says Dr. Kessler accepted money to falsify evaluations.”

“She says Marcus Hale and Vanessa Whitmore used Adrian's temporary authorization to isolate her and manipulate the board.”

Marcus slapped his hand on the table.

“This is theater.”

Eleanor looked at him.

Then she smiled.

She pulled the hospital bracelet from her wrist and placed it on the table.

Attached to its underside was a tiny recording device.

Vanessa went pale.

Eleanor signed one sentence.

Emma translated.

“She says Dr. Kessler confessed before dawn.”

One detective stepped forward.

“He did.”

Marcus moved toward the door.

The second detective blocked him.

But Vanessa remained seated.

She looked at Eleanor with cold hatred.

“You still cannot stop the vote.”

Eleanor's smile widened.

Then she signed something Emma did not understand.

Adrian did.

His face changed completely.

“That is impossible.”

Eleanor nodded.

Reed opened the final sealed document from the cellar.

The trust everyone had been fighting over had been dissolved three months earlier.
