Chapter 1: The Truth They Tried to Bury

The mother—Lena—clutched the tiny, trembling body against her chest, her hands shaking so violently she could barely hold on. Tears streamed down her face, mixing with the newborn’s soft whimpers.
“She’s alive… she’s alive…” Lena whispered, over and over, as if saying it might make it permanent.
Her son, Caleb, stood close beside her, gripping her hospital gown with small, trembling fingers. “I told you, Mommy. I heard them talking… the nurse and that man. They said the baby didn’t make it—but they were lying.”
Lena’s breath caught.
Lying?
Sirens wailed faintly in the distance. A gust of wind rattled the chain-link fence behind them, and suddenly Lena felt it—that creeping sense that this wasn’t an accident.
“Caleb,” she said, kneeling to his level despite the pain tearing through her body. “What exactly did you hear?”
“They said the truck comes at noon,” he replied quickly. “And that no one would ever know.”
Lena’s heart dropped into her stomach.
This wasn’t negligence.
This was intentional.
Within minutes, a security guard rushed into the alley, alerted by the noise. His expression shifted from confusion to shock when he saw Lena—barefoot, bleeding slightly, holding a newborn beside a dumpster.
“We need help!” Lena cried. “Someone tried to kill my baby!”
Everything moved fast after that—too fast. Ambulances. Police. Questions. Faces she didn’t trust.
But Lena held on to one thing.
