Chapter 2: Shadows Inside the Hospital

The hospital room felt different now.
Colder.
Dangerous.
Lena sat upright in her bed, her newborn daughter—whom she named Hope—resting safely in her arms. A police officer stood near the door, while Caleb slept curled up in a chair beside her.
“You’re saying a staff member declared your baby deceased… without verification?” Detective Harris asked, flipping through his notes.
Lena nodded, her jaw tight. “And somehow she ended up in a dumpster behind the hospital.”
Harris exchanged a glance with another officer. “We’re reviewing security footage. But there’s something else you should know.”
Lena’s stomach tightened.
“There’s been another case.”
Silence filled the room.
“Two months ago,” he continued, “a newborn was reported stillborn here. The parents didn’t ask for an investigation.”
Lena’s blood ran cold.
“This isn’t the first time,” she whispered.
Just then, the door creaked open.
A nurse stepped inside—the same one Lena had seen blurred in the background when she woke up earlier.
Their eyes met.
And for a split second, Lena saw it.
Fear.
Not concern. Not sympathy.
Fear of being caught.
Lena tightened her grip on Hope instinctively.
“That’s her,” Lena said, her voice shaking but firm. “She was there.”
The room shifted instantly. Officers moved. The nurse froze.
“I—I don’t know what you’re talking about—”
But she was already backing toward the door.
Too late.
Within seconds, she was stopped.
And as she broke down under questioning, the truth unraveled—dark, horrifying, and unthinkable.
A small underground operation.
Illegal adoptions.
Babies declared dead… then sold.
Lena closed her eyes, holding Hope closer.
If Caleb hadn’t spoken up…
May you like
If she hadn’t run…
Her daughter would have disappeared forever.
