Chapter 2: The Mask Falls

All eyes turned.
Slowly. Reluctantly. Fearfully.
Toward Victoria.
Her smile didn’t disappear right away—but it changed. Tightened. Hardened.
“That’s fake,” she said instantly. “It has to be.”
“No,” Daniel whispered, his voice hollow. “That’s not fake…”
Victoria’s gaze snapped toward him. “You believe this? Over me?”
“I don’t know what to believe,” he admitted, stepping back.
The woman with the phone took another step forward. “Her name isn’t just Victoria Hale,” she said. “It’s Victoria Hale-Grayson.”
A murmur spread through the crowd.
“She’s been under investigation for months,” the woman continued. “Financial fraud. Insurance schemes. And now…” her voice dropped, “attempted mass poisoning.”
“That’s insane!” Victoria snapped. “You think I’d poison my own wedding guests?!”
“Yes,” the woman said simply. “Because you took out a policy on half the people in this room.”
The silence this time was suffocating.
Victoria laughed—too loudly, too sharply. “You’re all just going to stand there and let this psycho ruin everything?”
But no one moved.
Because deep down… they had seen it.
In the video.
In her eyes.
In the cracks forming beneath her perfect composure.
“Who are you?” Daniel asked the woman.
She hesitated.
Then answered, “My name is Elena Cruz.”
Recognition flickered in a few faces.
“She’s the journalist,” someone whispered. “The one who exposed the Westbridge scandal…”
Victoria’s expression finally faltered.
Just for a second.
But it was enough.
“You followed me,” Victoria said quietly, her voice no longer performative. “You’ve been watching.”
“Yes,” Elena said. “Because people kept getting hurt around you… and no one could prove why.”
Victoria’s lips curved slightly.
Not into a smile.
Into something darker.
“And now you think you’ve won?”
Sirens echoed faintly in the distance.
Elena didn’t look away. “No,” she said. “I think I stopped you.”

For the first time, Victoria’s mask shattered completely.
And what remained… was terrifying.
