Chapter 2: The Perfect Lie

Marlene took the stand, her hands trembling—but her voice did not.
“I saw Clara that night,” she said. “She was arguing with Mr. Hargrove. It got… violent.”
Clara’s heart slammed against her ribs. “That’s a lie!”
“Order!” the judge barked.
Arthur finally looked at her.
Not with anger.
Not with fear.
But with quiet satisfaction.
Daniel stood. “Your Honor, we request a recess—this testimony was not disclosed—”
“Denied,” the judge replied sharply. “Proceed.”
Marlene continued, each word like a nail sealing Clara’s fate.
“She threatened him. I heard her say, ‘You’ll regret this.’”
Gasps filled the room.
Clara felt the walls closing in.
Arthur had done it.
