That night, in a dimly lit holding room, Clara sat with her head in her hands.
“I’m losing,” she whispered.
Daniel shook his head. “No. Something doesn’t add up.”
He slid a folder across the table.
“I did some digging on Marlene,” he said. “She transferred money—large amounts—just three days ago.”
Clara looked up. “From Arthur?”
“Through a shell account,” Daniel said. “But yes.”
A flicker of hope ignited.
“But that’s not enough,” Clara said. “He’ll bury it.”
Daniel leaned closer. “Then we don’t expose the money.”
Clara frowned. “What do we expose?”
He smiled, just slightly.
“Arthur’s need to control the narrative.”
The next morning, Daniel called an unexpected witness.
“Your Honor, the defense calls… Arthur Hargrove.”
