Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Counter

Daniel couldn’t breathe.
The world narrowed to a single point—the woman behind the counter.
She looked older. A little thinner. Her hair was tied back simply, nothing like the way she used to wear it. But her eyes… those same warm, brown eyes he had memorized years ago.
“Emily?” His voice cracked.
The tray in her hands trembled.
For a moment, she just stared at him. Then her lips parted, but no sound came out.
“Mommy…” Lily whispered again, clutching Daniel’s sleeve.
Emily’s gaze dropped to the little girl.
And everything shattered.
Tears filled her eyes instantly. She stepped back as if she’d seen a ghost.
“No… no, this can’t…” she murmured.
Daniel stepped closer, his heart pounding violently. “We thought you were dead.”
The words hung between them like a storm.
Three years ago, Emily had disappeared after a car accident on a rainy highway. The car was found crushed near a riverbank. Her belongings were inside. But her body… never recovered.
Everyone said she was gone.
Everyone except Daniel, who never truly believed it—but had no proof to hold onto.
Emily shook her head slowly, tears slipping down her cheeks. “I didn’t remember… not at first.”
Daniel froze. “What?”
“I woke up in a hospital two states away,” she said, her voice trembling. “No ID. No memory. Nothing. They told me I’d been found unconscious near a roadside. I didn’t even know my own name.”
Lily’s small hand tightened in Daniel’s.
Emily took a shaky breath. “I started over. New name. New job. A life built from nothing.” Her voice broke. “And then tonight… I saw her.”

She looked at Lily again, her entire body shaking now.
“And something came back.”
