Chapter 2: Pieces of the Past

The rain outside grew heavier, tapping against the café windows like a heartbeat.
They sat in a quiet corner, untouched cups of coffee growing cold between them.
Lily sat close to Emily now, studying her face with wide, curious eyes.
“Why didn’t you come home?” Lily asked softly.
Emily swallowed hard, her hands clasped tightly together. “I didn’t know where home was, sweetheart.”
Daniel watched her carefully. Part of him wanted to pull her close, to forgive everything instantly. Another part—the wounded, broken part—needed answers.
“You never tried to find out?” he asked quietly.
“I did,” she said quickly. “Once I started remembering things—small flashes, feelings—I went back to the hospital records. But there was nothing linking me to you. No missing person report that matched. It was like… like I had disappeared from the world.”
Daniel frowned. “That’s impossible. I searched everywhere.”
“I know,” she whispered. “And I think… someone made sure we never found each other.”
A chill ran through him.
“What do you mean?”
Emily hesitated. “The night of the accident… I remember something now. Not clearly, but enough.”
She leaned closer, lowering her voice.
“There was another car.”
Daniel’s heart skipped.
“It wasn’t just an accident,” she continued. “Someone forced me off the road.”
Silence fell over the table.
“But why?” Daniel asked.
Emily shook her head. “I don’t know. But after I woke up, everything connected to my past was gone. Like someone erased me.”
Lily looked between them, confused but sensing the weight of the moment.
Daniel reached for Emily’s hand. She flinched slightly… then didn’t pull away.
“You’re here now,” he said firmly. “That’s what matters.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears again. “I missed everything… her first day of school, her birthdays…”
Lily suddenly leaned forward and hugged her tightly.

“It’s okay, Mommy,” she said. “You’re here now.”
Emily broke down completely.
