Chapter 3: The Fall

“Leave,” Sarah said, her voice trembling now. “I’m done.”
But Eleanor wasn’t finished.
Her hand shot out, gripping Sarah’s arm with surprising force.
“You don’t walk away from this family on your terms.”
Sarah struggled. “Let go of me!”
Instead, Eleanor dragged her toward the staircase landing.
Gasps echoed through the hallway. A few relatives stood frozen, unsure whether to intervene.
“Eleanor, stop!” someone shouted—but no one moved.
Sarah’s heart pounded violently. Her hands instinctively shielded her belly.
“Please,” she begged. “I’m pregnant—”
Eleanor’s eyes hardened.
“I know.”
And then she pushed.
Everything slowed.
Sarah fell backward, her body twisting as instinct took over. She curled around her stomach, protecting her baby at all costs.
The impact was brutal.
Pain exploded through her body as she hit the steps, tumbling down before landing hard at the bottom.
