Chapter 2 — The Moment Everything Breaks

The quiet didn’t last.

A heavy wooden door behind them slammed open.

The sound cut through the alley like a blade.

“No—get away from her!”

A woman’s voice.

Sharp.

Terrified.

The girl in the coat didn’t move away. She only tightened her arms slightly around the child in her embrace.

Her voice was small when she spoke.

“But… Mom… she’s hungry.”

Footsteps rushed forward.

A woman appeared at the entrance of the alley, her face pale, breath unsteady, panic written in every line of her expression.

She stepped forward—

Then stopped.

Her eyes fell on the girl in the dirt.

Then on the girl in the coat.

Then something inside her cracked open.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Her purse slipped from her shoulder and hit the ground with a dull sound she barely heard.

“No…” she whispered.

The hungry girl slowly looked up.

Her lips trembled.

Her voice came out broken.

“…Mom?”

Silence swallowed everything.

The woman’s body shook as if she had forgotten how to breathe properly. She dropped to her knees slowly, as if the ground was the only thing holding her up.

Her hands reached forward—but stopped halfway, afraid the moment wasn’t real.

Then she touched the girl’s face.

Dirty.

Thin.

Alive.

Her breath broke.

She pulled her closer.

And then she saw it.

Not just one child.

Two.

The realization didn’t come like a thought.

It came like impact.

Both of them were hers.

May you like

The world blurred.

And she pulled them both into her arms as if letting go would erase them again.
