Chapter 3 — What Was Lost, Returned

For a long time, no one spoke.
The alley stayed cold.
But it no longer felt empty.
The woman held both girls tightly, her hands trembling as if she was afraid they might disappear again if she relaxed even a little.
The girl in the coat didn’t cry loudly.
She just closed her eyes and leaned into her mother’s shoulder.
The hungry girl didn’t understand everything yet.
But she understood warmth.
She understood safety.
She understood that someone had finally come back for her.
Slowly, the mother pressed her forehead against her daughters, breathing shakily, trying to memorize the fact that they were real.
“I thought I lost you…” she whispered.
Her voice broke on the last word.
A long silence followed.
Then the wind softened.
The street noise faded again into something distant, unimportant.
And for the first time in a long time—
no one was alone.
The girl who had once sat in the cold alley was no longer forgotten.
The girl who had shared her bread was no longer just a stranger.
And a mother who had lived in fear finally had both of her children back in her arms.

The city kept moving.
But inside that alley, time finally stopped long enough for healing to begin.
