Chapter 4: The Names We Hide

Morning came too quickly.

I hadn’t slept.

Lorenzo hadn’t left.

“Your apartment is gone,” he said. “But nothing important was there.”

It wasn’t a question.

“No,” I said.

“Good.”

He studied me again.

“You came back for a reason.”

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

I held his gaze.

“My father.”

“That’s not enough.”

“It is for me.”

Lorenzo exhaled slowly.

“You’re not the only one using a fake name,” he said.

Something in my chest tightened.

“What’s yours?” I asked.

He hesitated.

Then, quietly:

“Not Falcone.”

Silence.

“Then who are you?” I whispered.

He looked at me in a way that changed everything.

“Someone who’s been trying to undo what happened that night.”

My breath caught.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No,” he said. “But you’re going to help me anyway.”

“Why would I do that?”

He stepped closer.

“Because the people who wanted your father dead… are the same people who want you dead now.”

A beat.

“And I’m the only reason you’re still alive.”
