Chapter 5: What Survives the Fire

It ended where it began.

Palermo.

The air smelled the same.

Salt. Smoke. Memory.

We stood in front of the ruins of that house.

Or what was left of it.

“You brought me here to prove something?” I asked.

“No,” Lorenzo said.

“To finish something.”

A man stepped out of the shadows.

Older. Thinner.

Alive.

I froze.

“Papa?” my voice broke.

He looked at me like he’d seen a ghost.

“Isabella…”

The world tilted.

I turned to Lorenzo.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you wouldn’t have believed me.”

He wasn’t wrong.

My father stepped forward, his eyes filled with regret.

“I tried to protect you,” he said.

“By disappearing?” I asked.

“By making them think you were gone too.”

I shook my head, tears burning.

“They burned everything.”

“I know,” he said. “And I’ve been trying to fix it ever since.”

Silence fell between us.

Then I looked at Lorenzo.

“You said you were undoing it.”

“I am.”

“Why?”

He held my gaze.

“Because I was there that night,” he said. “And I didn’t stop it.”

The truth settled between us.

Heavy.

Real.

But not unforgivable.

Not anymore.

I exhaled slowly.

“Then we finish it,” I said.

Together.

And for the first time since the fire—

I wasn’t a ghost.

May you like

I was something stronger.

I survived.
