Chapter 2: The First Truth

Claraara did not quit.

That was her first mistake.

Or maybe the decision that saved everyone.

When she entered Lorenzo’s room that morning, the atmosphere had changed. Not lighter—never that—but sharper. Like a blade freshly unsheathed.

Lorenzo Moretti was no longer staring out the window.

He was waiting.

For her.

His eyes followed her every step as she approached. Mateo stood in the corner, silent, arms crossed, watching like a man bracing for impact.

Claraara checked the IV first. Steady. Clean. No complications.

Only then did she speak.

“Good morning, Mr. Moretti.”

A pause.

Then—

“You don’t scare easily.”

The voice was still broken, dragged across rusted silence, but it was there.

Real.

Claraara didn’t react the way Mateo expected. No gasp. No hesitation.

“I’ve worked hospice,” she said calmly. “Death is louder than you.”

A flicker.

Not anger.

Approval.

Lorenzo’s lips twitched.

Mateo shifted. “Father, you shouldn’t strain yourself.”

Lorenzo ignored him completely.

Instead, his gaze locked onto Claraara.

“They lied to you.”

The words fell slowly. Carefully chosen.

Claraara frowned. “About what?”

Lorenzo didn’t answer immediately. His eyes drifted briefly—toward Mateo.

Then back.

“This house.”

Silence thickened.

Mateo’s voice cut in, sharp. “That’s enough.”

But Lorenzo smiled.

A thin, dangerous smile.

“No,” he rasped. “It’s just beginning.”
