Chapter 6: The Last Command

Dawn came quietly.
Too quietly for a house that had nearly burned itself down.
The bodies were gone.
The staff returned.
Everything looked normal.
But nothing was.
Lorenzo sat by the window again.
Weaker.
But lighter.
Claraara adjusted his blanket.
“No more secrets,” she said.
Lorenzo nodded faintly.
“No more.”
Mateo stood behind them, watching both.
Different now.
Less controlled.
More… human.
“Why speak now?” he asked.
Lorenzo’s eyes remained on the horizon.
“Because silence kept us alive.”
A pause.
“But truth… keeps us from becoming monsters.”
His breathing slowed.
Claraara felt it before she saw it.
The shift.
The end.
Mateo stepped forward. “Father—”
Lorenzo raised a trembling hand.
Not to command.
To rest.
On his son’s arm.
“For once,” he whispered, “choose who you want to be… not who you had to become.”
His eyes closed.
And this time—
They did not open again.
Epilogue: The Quiet After
Weeks later, the estate was different.
Quieter.
Cleaner.
Safer.
Mateo Moretti no longer ruled through fear.
Not entirely.
But enough had changed.
Claraara stood at the gate, ready to leave for good.
Mateo handed her an envelope.
She didn’t take it.
“I didn’t stay for money.”
“I know,” he said.
“That’s why I trust you.”
A long silence.
Then—
“He wasn’t a monster, was he?”
Claraara looked back at the house.
At the window.
At the chair.
“No,” she said softly.
“He was just a man who forgot how to stop fighting.”
Mateo nodded.
“And you reminded him?”
Claraara smiled faintly.
“No.”
She turned to leave.
“He reminded himself.”
And for the first time in years—
The Moretti house did not feel like a grave.
May you like
It felt like something that had finally… learned how to breathe.
The End.
