Chapter 7 - A New Purpose

The warm summer breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming jasmine through the open doors.
Vanessa meticulously trimmed the dead leaves off a sprawling pothos plant.
She hummed a quiet tune, completely at peace in her small, verdant world.
The familiar rumble of the yellow community bus broke the quiet afternoon silence.
It was Saturday, which meant Leo and the other children were arriving for their weekly lesson.
But as the doors hissed open, Vanessa immediately noticed something was terribly wrong.
Leo walked down the metal steps slowly, his usual bright energy entirely missing.
He carried his little clay pot, but his head hung low, his shoulders slumped in defeat.
Vanessa set down her gardening shears and quickly walked over to meet him.
"Leo, sweetheart, what is wrong?" she asked, crouching down to meet his sad gaze.
A single tear slipped down his cheek, leaving a clean trail through a smudge of dirt.
"They told me I have to move to a different home next month," Leo whispered.
"It is really far away, and I won't be able to come to the greenhouse anymore."
Vanessa’s heart dropped heavily into her stomach at the devastating news.
The thought of losing this sweet, gentle boy felt like a physical blow to her chest.
"Why are they moving you?" she asked gently, wiping the tear from his face.
"My foster mom said they have too many kids now," he sniffled quietly.
"She said I need to go to a place that has more room for me."
Vanessa looked up and saw Mrs. Higgins, the exhausted social worker, walking toward them.
Mrs. Higgins offered a sympathetic, weary smile as she approached the counter.
"It is true, Vanessa," Mrs. Higgins explained softly.
"We are relocating him to a long-term facility in the next county."
"Unless an adoptive family steps forward soon, it is our only viable option."
Vanessa stood up slowly, her mind racing with a sudden, overwhelming clarity.
The gaping hole in her heart, the one she thought would never heal, suddenly felt full.
She didn't need to fake a pregnancy or trap a wealthy man to become a mother.
The child she was meant to love was standing right in front of her, clutching a tiny sunflower.
"What if someone does want to adopt him?" Vanessa asked, her voice remarkably steady.
Mrs. Higgins looked slightly taken aback by the fierce determination in Vanessa's eyes.
"Well, they would need a stable job, a safe home, and a clean background," the social worker replied.
Vanessa looked down at her calloused, dirt-stained hands.
They were no longer the perfectly manicured hands of a society liar.
They were strong, capable hands that knew how to nurture and protect delicate things.
"I have all of those things," Vanessa stated firmly.

"I want to submit an application to adopt him."
Leo looked up, his blue eyes widening with a sudden, brilliant spark of hope.
