Chapter 8 - Building a Home

The adoption process was an exhausting mountain of endless paperwork and intense scrutiny.
Vanessa spent her evenings filling out thick stacks of forms at her small kitchen table.
She answered invasive questions about her past, her finances, and her deepest motivations.
Mrs. Higgins conducted multiple home visits to inspect the modest apartment above the bakery.
Vanessa scrubbed every square inch of the floor until the worn linoleum shone brightly.
She converted her small home office into a bright, welcoming bedroom for Leo.
She painted the walls a cheerful shade of yellow and hung up framed pictures of plants.
Thomas even helped her carry a sturdy oak bed frame up the narrow wooden stairs.
Despite her undeniable progress, a quiet fear lingered in the back of her mind.
She worried that her past deception with Julian might somehow disqualify her entirely.
She decided to be completely transparent with Mrs. Higgins about her previous mistakes.
"I made a terrible choice out of fear and desperation a long time ago," Vanessa confessed during one interview.
"But I am not that woman anymore, and I will never lie to protect myself again."
Mrs. Higgins listened quietly, taking careful notes on her yellow legal pad.
"We are looking for stability and genuine love, Vanessa, not a perfect past," the social worker replied gently.
"You have built a very solid, honest life here in this quiet community."
Meanwhile, Leo’s visits to the greenhouse became the absolute highlight of Vanessa’s week.
His tall green sunflower had finally bloomed, displaying bright yellow petals that tracked the sun.
He proudly watered it every Saturday, carefully measuring its height with a wooden ruler.
"It is almost as tall as me now!" Leo cheered one afternoon, pointing at the thick stem.
"That is because you gave it exactly what it needed to be strong," Vanessa said warmly.
She pulled him into a tight, affectionate hug, resting her chin on his messy blonde hair.
For the first time in her life, she felt completely anchored to the ground beneath her feet.
The agonizing wait for the state's final approval dragged on through the late summer months.
Every time her cell phone rang, her heart leaped into her throat with nervous anticipation.

She prayed silently every night, asking the universe for a chance to finally get it right.
She just wanted to be the mother that this sweet, abandoned boy so desperately deserved.
