Chapter 1: The Name That Changed Everything

Evelyn froze.

Her confidence—so sharp just seconds ago—cracked like glass.

Julia lay trembling on the bed, clutching both babies against her chest. Her breath was uneven, but her eyes… her eyes were no longer weak.

They were steady.

Dangerously steady.

“Say that name again,” the security guard demanded, looking between Evelyn and Julia.

Evelyn tried to recover. “It’s irrelevant. This woman is unstable. She just gave birth—”

“I said,” the guard interrupted, firmer now, “who is Judge Vance?”

Silence.

Then Julia spoke, her voice barely above a whisper—but it cut through the room like a blade.

“My father.”

The air left Evelyn’s lungs.

Across the room, Julia’s husband—Daniel—finally looked up. For the first time, there was fear in his eyes.

“You… you said your parents were dead,” he stammered.

Julia gave a small, tired smile.

“I said they were out of my life.”

Another guard stepped forward, already speaking into his radio.

“We need to secure this room. Possible attempted coercion involving a minor. Notify administration immediately.”

Evelyn’s face turned pale.

“This is a misunderstanding,” she snapped, but her voice lacked its earlier power.

The nurse who had hesitated before now moved to Julia’s side, gently placing a protective hand near the bassinets.

“No one is taking these babies,” she said firmly.

Daniel took a step forward. “Julia… why didn’t you tell me?”

Julia didn’t answer him.

Instead, she looked straight at Evelyn.

“You wanted one of my children?” she whispered. “Now you’re going to explain exactly why.”
