The Name Beneath the Dust

The woman stood frozen.

Her breath caught halfway in her throat, eyes locked on the boy she had just tried to pull her son away from.

“Mom?” the boy had said.

That single word didn’t belong on a cold street corner. It didn’t belong in his cracked lips or his hollow cheeks.

It belonged somewhere warm. Somewhere safe.

The well-dressed boy stepped forward slightly, still holding the half-eaten bread. “Mom…?” he repeated, softer this time, as if testing whether the word itself was real.

The woman shook her head violently. “No… no, that’s not possible.”

But her voice betrayed her.

Because she knew those eyes.

The same eyes she had kissed goodnight every night until six years ago.

The same eyes that had disappeared after the accident.

Her son—her first child—had been lost in a system of paperwork, misreports, and time she could never get back.

And now he was standing in front of her, barefoot on concrete.

The boy took a shaky step forward. “I… I remember you,” he whispered. “You used to sing before I slept.”

The world tilted.
