The Wall Between Us

The woman dropped to her knees, trembling.

“No… no, you were adopted. They told me you were safe. They told me—”

Her voice broke.

The homeless boy flinched at the word adopted, as if it stung more than hunger ever had.

“I wasn’t safe,” he said quietly. “I was moved… again and again. No one kept me long.”

Silence swallowed the street.

Her younger son, still holding the empty bread bag, looked between them in confusion. “Mom… you know him?”

The woman couldn’t answer.

She reached forward, stopping just inches from touching him, afraid he might vanish like a hallucination.

“I searched for you,” she whispered. “Every day.”

The boy laughed once—small, cracked, broken. “Then why didn’t you find me?”

That question shattered something inside her.

Not anger. Not guilt.

Distance.

Years of it.

A police officer passing nearby slowed down, noticing the scene, but something in the air stopped him from intervening. Even strangers could feel it—this wasn’t a moment that belonged to law or logic.

It belonged to something older.

Something human.

The boy finally looked down at the bread in his hand.

Then he did something unexpected.

He broke it in half again and offered it back to her.

“Are you hungry too?” he asked.

And in that moment, the wall between them began to crack.
