Chapter 1: The Hidden Truth
The nurse’s arms trembled as she held the newborn closer to her chest, backing slowly toward the door. The baby stirred, letting out a soft cry that cut through the suffocating silence.
“Please,” the mother sobbed, reaching out weakly from the hospital bed. “She’s my baby… don’t take her…”
“I’m not taking her,” the nurse whispered, her voice cracking. “I’m saving her.”
The father took a cautious step forward, his hands raised. “Saving her from what? You’re scaring us!”
Before the nurse could respond, two security guards appeared in the doorway behind the doctor. The tension in the room snapped tight like a wire.
“Easy,” the older doctor said firmly, glancing back at security. “Nobody rushes her.”
He turned his attention back to the nurse. “You said the baby isn’t safe here. That’s a serious claim. You need to explain—now.”
Tears streamed down her face as she shook her head. “You won’t believe me… none of you will…”
“Try us,” the doctor said quietly.
The nurse swallowed hard, then spoke the words that changed everything:
“The baby’s chart… it’s been altered. Someone flagged her for a ‘special transfer’ tonight. But it’s not a transfer.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “It’s a cover.”
The room fell silent.
“A cover for what?” the father demanded.
The nurse looked directly at the doctor. “For a mistake. A fatal one.”
