Chapter 3: Safe Haven

Morning light poured softly through the hospital window, washing away the shadows of the night before.
The mother cradled her baby peacefully, her tears now quiet and full of relief rather than fear. The father sat beside her, one hand resting gently on the child’s tiny fingers.
“She’s perfect,” he whispered.
Across the room, the nurse stood near the door, unsure whether to stay or leave.
“You saved her,” the mother said softly.
The nurse shook her head. “I broke every rule in the book.”
“You followed the right one,” the father replied. “The one that matters.”
A police officer stepped into the room, nodding respectfully. “The investigation has confirmed everything. The records were falsified. The responsible parties are in custody.”
The nurse closed her eyes, releasing a breath she’d been holding all night.
“You’re not in trouble,” the officer added. “If anything… you’re the reason we found the truth.”
The doctor’s name—and the scandal—would soon spread beyond the hospital walls. Policies would change. Safeguards would be strengthened.
But in that quiet room, none of that mattered as much as the small, sleeping life in her mother’s arms.
The nurse stepped closer one last time, gently brushing a finger against the baby’s hand. The tiny fingers curled instinctively around hers.
“She’s safe now,” the nurse whispered.
The mother smiled through her tears. “Because of you.”
As the nurse walked out into the bright morning hallway, the chaos of the night finally gave way to something else—
Hope.

And for the first time, the hospital truly felt like what it was meant to be:
A safe haven.
