Chapter 12 - The Person He Trusted Most.

The fire alarm ended twenty minutes later.

Nobody left the estate.

Adrian moved everyone involved into the study.

Victor sat near the fireplace.

Celeste stood by the window with Marcus between her and the door.

Gavin paced behind the couch.

Emma sat beside the metal cashbox.

The sealed envelope remained in Adrian’s hand.

He turned it over twice.

The handwriting was unquestionably his.

ADRIAN - OPEN ONLY IF THEY SAY YOU AGREED.

He broke the seal.

Inside was a single folded sheet of paper.

The message had been written shakily.

I DID NOT AUTHORIZE A PROXY.

I DID NOT APPROVE FOUNDATION TRANSFERS.

IF I CANNOT REMEMBER THIS LATER, ASK GAVIN WHAT HE SIGNED.

Adrian stopped reading.

The room went silent.

Gavin’s face drained of color.

Emma looked at him.

“What did you sign?”

Gavin did not answer.

Adrian’s voice was almost calm.

“Gavin.”

His cousin closed his eyes.

“A temporary management authorization.”

Adrian stared at him.

“You told me you never took executive authority.”

“I didn’t think I had a choice.”

“You had a choice to tell me.”

Gavin’s voice rose.

“You were in intensive care, the lenders were panicking, the board wanted stability, and Victor said the company could collapse before you woke up.”

Victor said nothing.

Gavin pointed toward him.

“He told me it would last seventy-two hours.”

Adrian looked at Victor.

“How long did it last?”

Victor’s mouth tightened.

“Operational authority is complicated.”

“How long?”

“Six weeks.”

Gavin looked stunned.

“You said it expired automatically.”

Victor leaned back.

“You signed a renewal provision.”

“I signed what you put in front of me because my cousin was fighting to stay alive.”

Adrian looked away.

That sentence hurt more than the fraud.

Not because Gavin had betrayed him for money.

Because Gavin had betrayed him out of fear and then hidden it out of shame.

Emma reached for the voice recorder.

“Maybe this tells us what happened next.”

Celeste spoke sharply.

“Don’t.”

Everyone looked at her.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

Celeste regained a little of her composure.

“Because recordings can be misunderstood.”

Emma looked at the device.

“Then context should help.”

She pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then came Victor’s voice.

“The authorization is active.”

A second voice answered.

Gavin.

“Do it.”

The recording stopped.

Emma looked at Gavin.

So did Adrian.

Gavin stared at the recorder as if it had become something alive.

“No.”

Victor’s face relaxed for the first time all day.

Adrian’s voice turned dangerously quiet.

“What did you tell him to do?”

Gavin shook his head.

“That is not the whole recording.”

Celeste stepped toward the table.

Marcus blocked her.

Gavin pointed at the recorder.

“Play the rest.”

Emma pressed the button again.

Nothing happened.

The device showed an empty battery symbol.

May you like

Victor almost smiled.

And Gavin looked at Adrian with the desperation of a man realizing that the truth existed, but might not survive long enough to save him.
