Chapter 13 - The Door Finally Opens.

Marcus replaced the recorder battery with one from the security office.

The wait lasted less than five minutes.

To Gavin, it seemed much longer.

Adrian never looked away from him.

Emma finally pressed play again.

The recording resumed exactly where it had stopped.

Gavin’s voice came through the speaker.

“Do it.”

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“Freeze every transfer until Adrian wakes up.”

Victor’s voice answered.

“That will create panic.”

“Then let them panic.”

Gavin continued.

“No money moves without his approval.”

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

Gavin sat down hard on the edge of a chair.

“I told you.”

The recording continued.

There was a click.

A door opening.

Then Celeste’s voice.

“Mr. Hale, the staff accounts are ready.”

Victor answered.

“Use small amounts.”

Emma’s face tightened.

Victor’s voice remained calm and businesslike.

“No single transfer large enough to attract attention.”

Celeste asked, “And the signatures?”

“We already have enough samples.”

Gavin stared at Victor.

“You used my authorization to access the foundation.”

Victor said nothing.

The recording moved forward.

Another conversation had been captured days later.

Celeste said, “He is improving faster than expected.”

Victor replied, “Then keep the house noisy.”

“What does that mean?”

“Problems.”

“Staff disputes.”

“Scheduling errors.”

“Anything that makes Adrian think every detail is slipping because he cannot be everywhere anymore.”

Emma looked at Adrian.

His face had gone completely still.

Victor had not simply stolen money.

He had used Adrian’s injury against him.

The recorder crackled again.

Celeste’s voice became quieter.

“What about the accident?”

A pause followed.

Victor answered.

“I had nothing to do with that crash.”

Then another pause.

“But I was not going to waste the opportunity it gave us.”

Adrian opened his eyes.

Victor stood.

“This recording was made illegally.”

Marcus stepped toward him.

Victor stopped.

Adrian’s voice remained low.

“You can discuss admissibility with my attorneys.”

Celeste looked at the floor.

For the first time, she seemed tired rather than controlled.

Emma watched her.

“Why me?”

Celeste looked up.

Emma held out her scraped hands.

“Why make my shifts impossible?”

“Why lock me in that room?”

Celeste’s expression hardened again.

“Because you noticed things.”

Emma stared at her.

“That’s all?”

“You remembered handwriting.”

“You asked why numbers changed.”

“You talked to Luis.”

Celeste’s voice became bitter.

“People who pay attention are dangerous when everyone else is trained to look away.”

Adrian looked at Emma.

She did not seem triumphant.

She seemed hurt by how ordinary the explanation was.

Victor adjusted his jacket.

“Adrian, think carefully.”

Adrian looked at him.

Victor continued.

“If this becomes public, lenders will ask questions.”

“Investors will panic.”

“Your board will wonder how much control you really had.”

He spread his hands.

“We can solve this quietly.”

Emma looked at Adrian.

So did Gavin.

Victor took one step closer.

“Protect the company.”

Adrian stared at him for a long moment.

Then he turned his wheelchair toward the desk where his phone was waiting.

Victor’s expression eased, certain he had won.

May you like

Adrian picked up the phone.

And called the authorities.
