Chapter 10 - The Wrong Key.

Emergency lighting painted the security room in dim red strips.

Emma could not see the person’s face.

She could see the papers.

Three white pages.

A hospital logo.

Adrian Vale’s name across the top.

Marcus stepped in front of Emma.

“Put them down.”

The figure froze.

Then a familiar voice whispered, “Don’t call anyone.”

Emma recognized it first.

“Peter?”

The kitchen assistant stepped into the emergency light.

He looked exhausted and terrified.

Marcus lowered his stance but did not relax.

“You disappeared this morning.”

Peter nodded.

“Celeste told me to.”

Emma stared at him.

“Why do you have those pages?”

“Because Luis gave me a key.”

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“What key?”

Peter held up a small brass key.

It looked almost identical to the one Emma had found.

Almost.

The teeth were different.

Emma suddenly understood.

“There were two keys.”

Peter nodded.

“The one you found opened the archive room.”

He raised the second.

“This one opens a lockbox behind the old linen cabinet.”

Marcus took the medical pages.

“How did they get there?”

Peter shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

He had discovered the lockbox weeks earlier while repairing a loose cabinet hinge.

Inside were copied clinic records, staff payroll lists, and a small voice recorder.

Peter had told Luis.

Luis told him to leave everything untouched until they figured out whom they could trust.

Then Emma found the archive documents.

Everything accelerated.

“Where is the recorder?” Marcus asked.

Peter’s face tightened.

“Gone.”

“Who took it?”

“I think Celeste.”

The mansion lights suddenly returned.

Every monitor came back at once.

Emma looked toward the dining-room camera.

Adrian was still at the head of the table.

Gavin was beside him.

Pierce’s chair was empty.

“So is Celeste’s,” Emma said.

Marcus cursed under his breath and radioed the security team.

Adrian’s voice came through almost immediately.

“Marcus, report.”

“We found Peter.”

A pause.

“Alive?”

Peter looked offended.

“Yes.”

“And Pierce?”

“Missing from the dining room.”

Adrian’s tone changed.

“Lock the exterior gates.”

Emma turned to Peter.

“What was on the missing pages?”

Peter pointed to them.

“Read the second one.”

Marcus handed it to Emma.

She scanned the notes.

Most of the medical language meant nothing to her.

One sentence did.

PATIENT REGAINED CONSCIOUSNESS AT 1:18 A.M. AND VERBALLY REFUSED REQUEST TO EXECUTE DOCUMENTS PRESENTED BY PRIVATE PARTY.

Emma looked up.

“Someone tried to make him sign papers while he could barely move.”

Peter nodded.

The next line had been circled in red ink.

PRIVATE PARTY IDENTIFIED BY PATIENT AS V.H.

Marcus went completely still.

Emma whispered, “Who is V.H.?”

Marcus looked toward the dining-room monitor.

One chair near Adrian had remained occupied through the entire blackout.

Victor Hale.

Chief financial officer of Vale Holdings.

The man who controlled the foundation accounts.

The man nobody had questioned because his name had never appeared on a single suspicious transfer.

Then Victor stood from the table.

He leaned down beside Adrian.

May you like

And the camera microphone caught him saying five quiet words.

“We need to talk alone.”
