Chapter 9 - A Quiet War.

Adrian’s plan began with breakfast.

At eight the next morning, every department head at Vale Holdings received an invitation to a private estate meeting.

The message was intentionally boring.

Quarterly compliance review.

Mandatory attendance.

Dr. Nolan Pierce received a separate invitation as an outside medical consultant.

Gavin read the final guest list twice.

“He won’t come.”

Adrian adjusted the cuff of his black shirt.

“He will if he thinks I remember something.”

Emma stood by the study desk in a fresh uniform, despite Adrian’s repeated instructions not to work.

He looked at her.

“You are not serving the meeting.”

“I know.”

“You are also not cleaning during the meeting.”

“I know.”

“You are not going near Celeste.”

Emma folded her arms.

“Anything else?”

“Yes.”

Adrian pointed to the couch.

“Sit.”

She gave him a look that would have gotten most employees dismissed from lesser households.

Then she sat.

Marcus entered carrying a sealed folder.

“Clinic records.”

Gavin frowned.

“How?”

“Adrian’s attorney obtained an emergency preservation order.”

Marcus set the folder down.

“The clinic cannot delete or alter his file while the request is active.”

Adrian opened it.

The first pages were ordinary.

Vitals.

Medication lists.

Rehabilitation notes.

Then Emma noticed the page numbers.

“Thirty-seven.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“It goes from thirty-seven to forty-one.”

Three pages were missing.

Marcus checked the index.

The missing section covered the first hour after Adrian arrived at the clinic from the hospital three days after the crash.

Gavin stared at the gap.

“You were transferred there under heavy medication.”

Adrian looked at him.

“So why would anyone remove three pages?”

No one answered.

At eleven, the guests began arriving.

Celeste appeared in a dark gray dress rather than her usual management uniform.

She looked composed.

Dr. Pierce arrived eleven minutes later.

He shook Gavin’s hand.

Then he saw Adrian.

Something subtle passed across his face.

Recognition was expected.

Fear was not.

The meeting began in the dining room.

The same chandelier from two nights earlier burned above the polished table.

Adrian placed no documents in front of anyone.

He simply looked around the room.

“I discovered irregularities in the Vale Foundation.”

Pierce did not move.

Celeste did not blink.

Adrian continued.

“Someone has been using my signature.”

A vice president asked whether the police had been contacted.

“Not yet.”

Pierce shifted in his chair.

Adrian noticed.

“So,” Adrian said, “I thought I would give the responsible person one opportunity to speak privately before I decide how public this becomes.”

Silence.

Emma watched from the hidden security room with Marcus.

Every camera fed into the wall of monitors.

Then she noticed something.

Pierce was not watching Adrian.

He was watching Celeste.

And Celeste was watching the clock.

Eleven forty-seven.

Emma leaned closer to the monitor.

“What happens at eleven forty-seven?”

Marcus looked at her.

“Nothing scheduled.”

The clock changed.

A second later, every screen went black.

The mansion lost power.

Emergency lights clicked on.

Marcus reached for his radio.

Emma heard a door open behind them.

She turned.

May you like

Someone stood in the dark security-room entrance.

And the person was holding the missing three pages from Adrian’s medical file.
