CHAPTER 3: THE PERFECT FAMILY FRACTURES

By afternoon, the house no longer looked like a party.

It looked like evidence.

Officers moved in and out. Neighbors whispered behind curtains. Emma’s balloons had deflated slightly, sagging toward the floor like they knew the truth had weight.

Vanessa tried to laugh it off at first.

“You’re blowing this out of proportion.”

Then the bracelet came up.

Then the sedatives.

Then the 911 recording.

And suddenly, her voice changed.

“She wasn’t supposed to stay out there that long.”

The words hit harder than anything else.

Not supposed to.

Planned.

My mother broke next.

Tears. Shaking hands. Claims of pressure, embarrassment, reputation.

“She ruined everything,” she whispered. “Your life, our image—everything!”

I stared at her, realizing something cold and final:

They hadn’t lost control.

They had acted on it.

The officer didn’t hesitate.

“Ma’am, you’re under arrest.”

May you like

And just like that—

The perfect family shattered.
