CHAPTER 4: WHAT SURVIVES

Lily woke up two days later.

The room was quiet when her eyes fluttered open, her voice barely a whisper.

“Mommy?”

I was there before she finished the word.

Tears came then—not loud, not dramatic. Just silent and unstoppable.

She didn’t remember everything.

But she remembered enough.

“Auntie said we were playing a game… then I got sleepy.”

That was all it took.

The case built itself after that.

Charges were filed. Statements taken. Evidence stacked piece by piece until the truth stood too tall to ignore.

Attempted harm. Neglect. Endangerment.

Words that sounded clinical—but carried the weight of betrayal.

Marcus stayed strong. Steadier than I had ever seen him.

But me?

I was changing.

May you like

Not breaking.

Becoming.
