Chapter 4: The Fall of Pride

Eleanor Whitmore had never begged for anything in her life.

Until that night.

“You can’t do this,” she said, rushing toward the bride as she headed for the exit. “You don’t understand what this means!”

The bride turned slowly.

“Oh, I understand perfectly.”

“Our family—our company—everything depends on—”

“On my family’s money?” she finished.

Eleanor froze.

For the first time, the truth sounded ugly out loud.

“Please,” Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking. “We can fix this.”

The bride studied her carefully.

“All those years of looking down on people,” she said softly. “And now you’re asking one of them to save you.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was wrong.”

“Too late,” the bride replied.

And then she walked away.

Leaving behind a woman who had just realized—
