Chapter 2: Truth Beneath the Surface

The guests began to disperse slowly, murmuring among themselves, casting glances filled with curiosity—and judgment.

Security approached quietly, waiting for instruction.

The older woman reached out desperately. “You can’t do this to me. I gave everything to this store!”

“And what did you take?” the younger woman asked.

That question hung heavier than any accusation.

The boy shifted slightly. “Are we going home?” he whispered.

She looked down at him, her expression instantly softening.

“Yes,” she said gently. “We are.”

Then she looked back up.

“But first… we finish this.”

She turned toward the small group of executives who had gathered nearby.

“I want a full internal review,” she said. “Employee treatment, financial records, everything.”

The older woman’s composure shattered completely. “You don’t understand—this industry is hard. People have to be pushed—”

“Not humiliated,” the younger woman interrupted.

Not loudly. Not harshly.

Just truthfully.

A quiet voice came from the edge of the crowd—a young waitress who had witnessed everything.

“She’s right,” the waitress said hesitantly. “People are scared to work under her.”

More voices followed.

Small at first.

Then undeniable.

The older woman’s shoulders slumped as the reality closed in around her.

The younger woman exhaled slowly, as if releasing something she had carried for too long.

“I trusted you,” she said. “That was my mistake. But I won’t let it become everyone else’s burden.”
