Chapter 6 - More Than Blood

As autumn painted the Connecticut hills in shades of gold and amber, the house settled into a steady, joyous rhythm. It was a Tuesday in late October—Martha’s sixty-first birthday.

Historically, Martha preferred to let the day pass unnoticed, but Jack and Lily had other plans. While Martha was out running errands, the kitchen transformed into a chaotic bakery. Jack, covered in flour, helped Lily whisk a bowl of chocolate cake batter. They were laughing hysterically at a smudge of frosting on Jack’s nose when the front door chimed.

"Surprise!" Jack and Lily yelled in unison as Martha walked into the kitchen, holding up a slightly lopsided but deeply loved chocolate cake decorated with vibrant rainbow sprinkles.

Martha froze, dropping her car keys into her purse as tears instantly welled in her eyes. "Oh, my goodness. You two didn't have to do this."

"Yes, we did," Jack said, setting the cake down and pulling out a chair for her. Once she was seated, he slid a thick, sealed envelope across the granite counter.

Martha opened it cautiously. Inside was a legal document establishing a permanent, heavily funded trust in her name. It was enough money to guarantee a luxurious retirement anywhere in the world.

"Jack, I can't accept this. This is too much," Martha gasped, shaking her head.

Jack knelt beside her chair, grasping her weathered hands. "You saved my daughter's life, Martha. You protected her when I wasn't looking. You aren't just an employee here. You are our family."

Lily squeezed in, wrapping her arms around Martha’s neck. "Please stay forever, Martha."

Tears spilled down the older woman's cheeks as she hugged the little girl tightly. The dark days were firmly behind them. In the warmth of the brightly lit kitchen, bound by love and fierce loyalty, they had finally built a real family.
