Chapter 3: The Truth Beneath Silence

Hours passed.

Or maybe minutes.

Caleb didn’t know.

He sat on a leather couch too big for him, wrapped in blankets, staring at the door where they had taken Elle.

The man returned eventually.

Slower this time.

Different.

“She’s alive,” he said.

Caleb’s breath caught.

“But…” the man continued, his jaw tightening, “she wouldn’t have lasted much longer.”

Silence filled the room.

Then Caleb asked the question no one had asked yet.

“Why did you help us?”

The man froze.

Because the answer wasn’t simple.

“I didn’t plan to,” he admitted.

And that was the truth.

He had walked that path a thousand times before.

And ignored a thousand things.

But not tonight.

Not them.

“What’s your name?” Caleb asked.

A pause.

“…Adrian.”

Caleb nodded slowly.

“Thank you, Adrian.”

The words landed heavier than they should have.

Because no one had said them to him like that in a very long time.
