Chapter 12 - The Vote Charlotte Was Supposed To Lose.

.The private trustee session began at six in the library overlooking the hotel courtyard.
Elizabeth sat at one end of the long walnut table.
Vivian sat at the other in a navy business suit that made her look nothing like the woman from the lobby.
Charlotte took the center seat without waiting to be invited.
Rebecca placed three folders in front of her.
Owen remained outside because he was not a trustee, but his influence was present in every page.
Elizabeth called the session to order.
“The question is limited.”
Charlotte looked at her aunt.
“Whether I am inconvenient enough to be declared unfit?”
“Whether temporary safeguards are needed.”
Vivian avoided Charlotte’s eyes.
Rebecca opened the first folder.
“Before any vote, we object to Vivian Hale’s appointment because of an undisclosed financial conflict.”
Elizabeth frowned.
“What conflict?”
Rebecca slid copies of the ledger entries across the table.
“Hale Management Consulting received millions in committee-directed transfers while Vivian served as CFO.”
Vivian pushed the papers back.
“My brother owns that firm, not me.”
“Your personal trust owns twenty percent.”
Vivian went still.
Charlotte watched her carefully.
“You told me Owen handled vendor strategy.”
“He did.”
“You forgot to mention you profited from it.”
Vivian’s face flushed.
Elizabeth turned toward her.
“Is that true?”
Vivian looked genuinely surprised that Elizabeth did not know.
“Yes, but the interest predates my appointment.”
Rebecca answered.
“That makes disclosure more important, not less.”
Elizabeth closed her eyes briefly.
The alliance at the table developed its first visible crack.
Charlotte opened the second folder.
“This is the access log for March 18.”
Vivian’s voice tightened.
“We have seen it.”
“Not this part.”
Daniel had spent the afternoon cross-referencing elevator camera metadata that survived outside the deleted security system.
The family credential entered the archive at 2:14 a.m.
At 2:11, a private elevator had been called from the penthouse using a guest code assigned to Elizabeth Mercer.
Elizabeth stared at the page.
“I was not here.”
Charlotte looked directly at her.
“Where were you?”
“At the hospital.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Rebecca opened the third folder.
Hospital visitor records showed Elizabeth leaving at 11:42 p.m. and returning at 3:06 a.m.
Elizabeth’s face lost color.
Vivian leaned away from her.
“What did you do?”
Elizabeth’s control finally broke.
“I took the family credential.”
Charlotte’s voice was barely above a whisper.
“Why?”
“Jonathan asked me to retrieve documents from the archive.”
“Which documents?”
“The founder amendment.”
Rebecca stood.
“That is impossible.”
Elizabeth looked at her.
“He wanted to destroy it.”
Charlotte felt every sound in the room become distant.
“My father wanted to destroy the clause protecting the hotel?”
Elizabeth nodded.
“He changed his mind about giving you control.”
Charlotte stared at her.
Then she noticed Vivian staring at Elizabeth with the same disbelief.
Charlotte asked one final question.
“If that is true, where is the original amendment?”
Elizabeth opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, the library doors swung open.

Daniel stood there holding a fireproof document case.
“We just found it inside Jonathan Vale’s old apartment safe.”
