Chapter 8 - The Manager’s Debt.

.Daniel closed the service corridor door behind him and looked at Jonathan Vale’s handwritten warning.

Charlotte did not speak immediately.

Harold Ellis watched both of them with the weary expression of a man who had been carrying suspicion too long.

Daniel finally removed his glasses.

“Your father had a reason to write that.”

Charlotte felt disappointment settle deeper than anger.

“Tell me.”

Daniel leaned against the wall.

“Two years ago, my wife needed an experimental treatment that insurance would not cover.”

Charlotte said nothing.

“Owen arranged a private loan through a company called Grayline Asset Services.”

Harold’s eyes sharpened.

“The same Grayline in the ledger.”

Daniel nodded.

“I did not know it was connected to him at first.”

“How much?” Charlotte asked.

“Four hundred thousand dollars.”

Charlotte absorbed the number.

“And what did he ask you to do?”

“At first, nothing.”

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“Then he asked for access reports.”

Charlotte’s stomach tightened.

“What kind of reports?”

“Executive floor entries, archived legal requests, board travel schedules.”

Harold shook his head.

“You gave him internal security information.”

“I was desperate.”

Charlotte turned away, furious precisely because she understood desperation did not erase consequences.

Daniel continued.

“When I realized what he was doing, I stopped cooperating.”

“And then?”

“He threatened to call the loan immediately and release private medical information to tabloids.”

Charlotte looked back at him.

“That is why you let the committee take control.”

“I kept telling myself I could limit the damage.”

“You watched them erase my father from his own office.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

The admission hurt more than any excuse would have.

Harold handed the ledger to Charlotte.

“Jonathan suspected Daniel was compromised, but he was not sure how.”

Daniel reached inside his suit jacket.

Charlotte stiffened.

He removed a small flash drive.

“I copied the executive access logs before Owen locked me out.”

Charlotte did not take it immediately.

“What is on there?”

“Every archive entry for the last six months.”

Rebecca joined them from the ballroom and listened as Daniel explained.

She plugged the drive into her encrypted laptop.

A list of access records appeared.

Owen Hale had entered the legal archive eleven times.

Vivian had entered twice despite holding no executive position.

Then Rebecca stopped scrolling.

“Charlotte.”

One entry showed a credential labeled C.VALE entering the archive at 2:14 a.m. on March 18.

Charlotte stared at it.

“I was in Boston.”

Daniel looked sick.

“That credential was your father’s emergency family card.”

“Who had it?”

Daniel hesitated.

“After Jonathan was hospitalized, the card was placed in the executive safe.”

Harold asked the obvious question.

“Who knew the combination?”

Daniel answered.

“Jonathan, me, and the chief financial officer.”

Charlotte frowned.

“Our CFO is Martin Keene.”

Daniel slowly shook his head.

“Not anymore.”

Charlotte’s pulse quickened.

“Who replaced him?”

Rebecca turned the laptop around.

May you like

The new CFO appointment had been signed four months earlier.

The name on the screen was Vivian Hale.
