Handcuffs clicked.

The sound echoed like a verdict.

The mother-in-law struggled, screaming, her voice cracking with desperation. “You can’t do this to me! This is MY house!”

But no one responded.

“You knew…” he whispered, staring at his wife.

She met his eyes.

“Yes.”

“And you still stayed?”

“For a while,” she said. “I needed the truth.”

He laughed weakly. “And now?”

“Now,” she replied, turning away, “I’m done.”
