Chapter 1: The Truth Beneath the Pain

The room fell silent after the doctor's command.

Karen froze, her face flushed with anger, but there was something else now—uncertainty.

The young girl lay trembling on the floor, clutching her plush bunny as tears streamed down her cheeks. The doctor quickly knelt beside her, his voice softening instantly.

“Hey, hey… it’s okay. I’ve got you,” he said gently, examining her leg without moving it too much. “Can you tell me where it hurts the most?”

“My… my leg…” she whimpered. “It burns…”

The doctor’s expression darkened. He carefully lifted the edge of the brace and immediately saw swelling that had worsened since her last visit.

“This isn’t normal,” he muttered. Then, louder, firmer: “Who was responsible for her care today?”

Karen crossed her arms defensively. “She’s been exaggerating for weeks. That thing—” she pointed at the brace “—is unnecessary.”

The doctor stood up slowly, his calm now replaced with controlled anger.

“That ‘thing’ is stabilizing a serious injury,” he said sharply. “And based on what I’m seeing, it may have been aggravated—recently.”

Karen scoffed, but her voice lacked confidence. “She just fell. Kids fall.”

The doctor didn’t respond to her. Instead, he turned to the nurse who had just entered.

“Call for imaging. Now. And notify Child Protective Services.”

Karen’s eyes widened. “You can’t be serious.”

“Oh, I’m very serious,” the doctor replied coldly. “Because this child isn’t just hurt… she’s been put in danger.”
