Chapter 2: The Truth She Buried

Elena closed her eyes for a moment.

She had rehearsed this moment in her mind a thousand times.

But never like this.

Never in front of a crowd.
Never with Leo in her arms.

“I was going to tell you,” she said quietly.

Victoria scoffed. “Oh, please. Another lie—”

“Enough!” Adrian’s voice thundered, silencing the room.

His eyes never left Elena.

“Talk.”

Elena swallowed, then finally spoke the truth she had buried for years.

“My name isn’t just Elena,” she said. “It’s Elena Maris.”

The name hit Adrian like a shockwave.

Maris.

His late wife’s last name.

“That’s not possible,” he whispered.

“She was my sister,” Elena said.

Gasps rippled through the room.

Adrian’s world tilted.

“My wife… she told me she had no family.”

“She didn’t want you to know,” Elena replied, her voice trembling now. “We were estranged. I made mistakes… ones I can never undo.”

Leo shifted in her arms, holding her tighter.

“When she got sick,” Elena continued, “I came back. Too late. But before she died… she made me promise something.”

Adrian’s throat tightened.

“She made me promise to watch over Leo,” Elena said. “Not as a nanny. Not as a stranger.”

Her voice broke.

“But as the only family he had left.”

Silence filled the space again—but this time, it wasn’t shock.

It was understanding.

Adrian looked at his son.

Then at Elena.

And suddenly, pieces began to fall into place.

The way Leo always calmed down around her.
The way she knew things she was never told.
The way she loved him… without hesitation.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Adrian asked, softer now.

“Because I didn’t think you’d let me stay,” she admitted. “And he needed me.”

Victoria stepped forward, furious. “This is insane. You’re just going to believe her? She manipulated her way into your house—”

“No,” Adrian said firmly.

For the first time, his voice was clear.

Certain.

“She didn’t.”

He looked at Elena again.

“She stayed.”
