Chapter 11 - The Tape in the Flight Bag.

The room became so quiet that the old recorder's faint electronic hiss sounded loud.

Avery did not look at General Ward.

She listened.

The recording was dated four days after Falcon Ridge.

Ward's voice sounded exhausted.

Reese's sounded controlled.

"If Avery ever learns what we approved, she will never forgive me," Ward said on the tape.

Reese replied, "Then do not turn a temporary authorization into a personal confession."

Ward said, "The altitude restriction was clear."

Reese answered, "And the certification update superseded it."

"I never saw that update."

"Camille did."

"Then show me."

A pause followed.

Avery could hear papers moving.

Reese spoke again.

"The review will handle the documentation."

Ward's voice hardened.

"That is not an answer."

"It is the answer you need if you want Monroe's crew protected from a larger inquiry."

The recording ended.

Avery stared at the device.

Maya pressed stop.

"That is all?" Noah asked.

"That file is all I found."

Ward looked at Avery.

"I did not know I was being recorded."

"That is not the part I care about."

Avery's voice was steady.

"What did you think we approved?"

Ward looked at the table.

"A temporary unit for restricted use."

"And when you learned it had been placed on my aircraft?"

"After the mission."

Avery let out a slow breath.

"Then why did you say I would never forgive you?"

Ward finally met her eyes.

"Because I had accepted the shortage plan at all."

He looked older in that moment.

"I knew the temporary units were a compromise."

Avery's anger did not disappear.

But it changed shape.

Ward had made a risky administrative decision.

He had not secretly sent her into the mountains with equipment he knew was wrong.

Reese had used Ward's guilt to keep him quiet.

Just as he had used Camille's signature.

Just as he had used Noah's clearance.

Just as he had used Avery's scars.

Avery looked at Maya.

"Where did you get the recorder?"

"Camille's Stratton folder."

Camille frowned.

"I have never seen it."

"It was inside a false bottom."

Noah stared at her.

"Who puts a false bottom in a corporate folder?"

"Someone who expects to need leverage."

Avery looked at Camille.

"Did Crane give you the folder?"

Camille nodded slowly.

"After Falcon Ridge."

"Why?"

"He said it contained reference documents in case the review team asked questions."

Dana spoke from the end of the table.

"So Crane may have been recording everyone."

The thought settled heavily over the room.

If Crane had collected private recordings, then Reese might not be the only person being controlled.

Avery turned to Noah.

"Check the recorder metadata."

Noah connected it to his laptop.

He worked silently for several minutes.

"There are deleted files," he said.

Everyone moved closer.

"Can you recover them?" Avery asked.

"Maybe."

Camille stood behind him, staring at the screen.

"If there is a recording of me, I want to hear it."

Avery looked at her.

"You may not like it."

"I already do not like me in this story."

Noah began a recovery scan.

The first deleted file appeared.

Date: six days after Falcon Ridge.

Crane's voice.

Then Reese's.

Reese said, "The archive copy has to disappear before contract review."

Crane replied, "Ward will object."

"Ward does not need to know."

"Bennett already requested diagnostics."

"Then make Bennett the problem."

Noah stopped breathing.

Avery put a hand on his shoulder.

The tape continued.

Crane asked, "And Monroe?"

Reese answered, "Leave her record unresolved."

"Why?"

"Because decorated heroes ask questions."

Camille closed her eyes.

Ward looked down.

Noah whispered, "That is it."

Avery's chest tightened.

Not because she needed vindication.

Because she finally heard the mechanism in plain language.

No complicated accident.

No misunderstanding.

A deliberate decision to bury evidence by isolating the people most likely to challenge it.

Noah recovered a second file.

This one was recent.

Two days before the gala.

Crane and Camille.

Camille's recorded voice said, "I am not touching her."

Crane answered, "You do not have to."

"Then find someone else."

"You want the board seat or not?"

Avery looked at Camille.

Camille's face burned with shame.

The recording continued.

Crane said, "She needs to look unstable."

Camille replied, "She is not unstable."

"Then make her angry."

"How?"

Crane laughed.

"You know exactly where she is vulnerable."

Avery stared at Camille.

Camille whispered, "I said no at first."

Avery did not answer.

The recording proved Camille had resisted.

It also proved she had eventually done it.

Both truths mattered.

Noah recovered a third file.

This one was only thirty seconds long.

Reese spoke alone, apparently leaving a voice note.

"If the Monroe event fails, move to the congressional briefing plan."

Ward's head snapped up.

"What congressional briefing?"

Camille looked horrified.

"There is a defense oversight hearing next week."

Dana opened her laptop.

"Stratton's expansion renewal is on the agenda."

Avery understood at once.

The gala had not been the final attack.

It had been rehearsal.

If Avery had reacted badly, her name would have been used at the hearing as proof that Falcon Ridge criticism came from a disgruntled commander.

If she stayed quiet, the renewal moved forward.

Either way, Stratton won.

Unless the hearing changed.

Avery looked around the room.

"We have six days."

Noah shook his head.

"To do what?"

Avery picked up the recorder.

"To make sure the seven missing minutes are the first thing they hear."

Ward studied her.

"You cannot walk into a congressional hearing with stolen recordings and expect everything to hold."

"Then we do not walk in with only recordings."

Avery looked at her crew.

"We build the whole chain."

Marcus smiled for the first time all day.

"Now that sounds like a mission."

Avery's phone buzzed.

A news alert appeared.

STRATTON AERONAUTICS REQUESTS EMERGENCY REVIEW OF COMMANDER MONROE'S FITNESS FOR TESTIMONY.

Below it was a quote from Colonel Reese.

Avery read the final line aloud.

"Recent public behavior raises legitimate questions about emotional objectivity."

Camille stared at the screen.

"He is using the gala."

May you like

Avery locked her phone.

"Then we give him something else to talk about."
