Chapter 8 - The Dinner That Became a Trap.

Avery arrived at the Carlton Hotel at 7:52 that evening.

She wore a charcoal blazer, black trousers, and her hair pulled into a practical low knot.

No gown.

No medals.

Nothing anyone could pull down, point at, or turn into a headline.

Ward had objected to the meeting.

Noah had objected more loudly.

Avery went anyway.

She also made sure Dana sat three tables away pretending to read a menu.

Marcus waited in the lobby.

Noah monitored from a car across the street.

Avery had promised Camille she would come without Ward.

She had not promised she would come without her crew.

Camille was already seated when Avery entered the hotel bar.

She wore a cream jacket over a dark dress and looked almost modest compared with the woman from the gala.

A glass of sparkling water sat untouched in front of her.

"You came," Camille said.

Avery sat across from her.

"You expected me not to?"

"I expected Ward to stop you."

"He stopped giving orders to me years ago."

Camille smiled.

"That is what you think."

Avery did not react.

"You said he knew."

"He did."

"He told me."

For the first time, Camille looked surprised.

Avery continued.

"He also told me you claimed the temporary unit had received full certification."

Camille's expression returned to neutral.

"Of course he did."

"Was it true?"

"At the time, I believed it was."

Avery leaned back.

"That is a careful sentence."

"We are talking about two years ago."

"You remembered enough to plan a camera angle yesterday."

Camille's eyes narrowed.

"You always did confuse confidence with evidence."

Avery almost smiled.

"And you always confused polished language with truth."

A server approached.

Camille ordered coffee.

Avery ordered nothing.

When the server left, Camille folded her hands.

"You want a villain," she said.

"You have built one in your head because it is easier than accepting the system failed."

"Systems do not pull dresses in ballrooms."

Camille's jaw tightened.

"That was a mistake."

"No."

Avery held her gaze.

"It was timed."

Camille said nothing.

"Stratton had the gala schedule," Avery continued.

"Elliot Crane was watching you."

The name hit.

Avery saw it immediately.

Camille's right hand moved toward her water glass, then stopped.

"You are in deeper than Ward understands," Camille said.

"Then explain it."

Camille looked past Avery toward the crowded room.

"Falcon Ridge became a problem after the contract review."

Avery waited.

"Stratton's expansion agreement was already politically sensitive," Camille continued.

"One failed component could have frozen the entire program."

"So someone changed the report."

"Someone changed emphasis."

Avery's voice cooled.

"Do not insult me with vocabulary."

Camille leaned forward.

"You think your scars make you the only person who paid a price?"

"No."

"My career was tied to that program."

"That sounds like motive, Camille."

Camille blinked.

Avery saw fear this time.

Real fear.

Not embarrassment.

Not anger.

Fear.

"You need to walk away," Camille said.

"Why?"

"Because Crane is not the top of this."

Avery glanced toward the mirrored wall behind the bar.

In the reflection, she saw a man enter through the hotel lobby.

Dark suit.

Gray tie.

Elliot Crane.

He did not look toward their table.

That was how she knew he had come for them.

Dana saw him too.

Her menu lowered by half an inch.

Avery kept her eyes on Camille.

"Did you invite him?"

Camille went pale.

"No."

That answer came without hesitation.

Avery believed it.

Crane crossed toward the elevators instead of the bar.

Noah's voice sounded softly through the wireless earpiece hidden beneath Avery's hair.

"He is not alone."

Avery did not respond.

Camille noticed the tiny change in her focus.

"You brought backup."

"So did someone else."

Camille looked toward the lobby and saw Crane.

Her posture changed completely.

"We need to leave."

Avery stayed seated.

"You first."

"Avery, listen to me."

"I have been listening for two years."

Camille reached across the table and grabbed Avery's wrist.

"Crane has the original disposal order."

Avery stared at her.

"Why does that matter?"

"Because the order is not signed by me."

"Who signed it?"

Camille looked toward the elevators again.

"Colonel Reese."

Avery's pulse accelerated.

"The investigator from the museum."

"Yes."

"Why would he destroy evidence?"

Camille released Avery's wrist.

"Because he did more than review Falcon Ridge."

The elevator doors opened across the lobby.

Colonel Daniel Reese stepped out.

He was not wearing a uniform.

Crane moved to meet him.

Avery heard Noah whisper in her ear.

"That is not a coincidence."

Camille stood.

"Now do you understand?"

Avery rose with her.

"Not yet."

Camille's eyes filled with something close to panic.

"Reese authorized the installation."

Avery froze.

"Ward signed the temporary test."

Camille spoke faster.

"I signed the maintenance acceptance."

"And Reese?"

"Reese changed the aircraft assignment."

Avery stared at the man across the lobby.

He turned.

Their eyes met.

He did not look surprised to see her.

He smiled.

Then he reached into his coat.

Avery tensed.

Reese removed a phone.

A second later, Avery's phone rang.

She answered without looking away from him.

"Commander Monroe," Reese said from across the lobby, "I believe it is time we stopped pretending this is an investigation."

Avery's voice was steady.

"What is it, then?"

May you like

Reese's smile disappeared.

"A negotiation."
