Hours later, the ballroom was empty.

The decorations remained, untouched—frozen in time like a celebration that never happened.

Emily stood alone near the window, staring out at the city lights.

Arthur approached quietly.

“It’s done,” he said. “The board has already responded. The investors pulled out within minutes.”

Emily nodded.

“And Daniel?”

Arthur hesitated.

“His company won’t survive the week.”

Silence settled between them.

“Good,” Emily said—but there was no satisfaction in her voice.

Only finality.

Arthur studied her for a moment before speaking again.

“You could’ve told him the truth from the beginning.”

Emily smiled faintly.

“I did,” she said. “He just never believed me.”

Arthur frowned.

“The agreement wasn’t about money,” Emily continued. “It was about character. My father built everything on trust.”
