Chapter 4 - The Woman in Beige.

By noon, Ava had stopped thinking of Elise as the obvious winner in the confrontation.
The more she replayed the scene, the stranger Elise’s behavior seemed.
She had never touched Grant.
She had never smiled at Ava.
She had barely looked comfortable standing in the room.
Ava had been too shocked to notice those details at first.
Now they felt like clues.
Rebecca advised Ava not to return to the penthouse alone, so Daniel went with her that afternoon to collect baby supplies and personal documents.
Grant was not there when they arrived.
The concierge hesitated when Ava requested the elevator.
“Mr. Bennett left instructions regarding access.”
Ava looked at him steadily.
“My name is on the residence record.”
The concierge flushed.
“I understand.”
Daniel stepped closer but remained polite.
“Please verify it.”
Two minutes later, the elevator opened.
The penthouse looked almost exactly as Ava had left it.
Almost.
Grant’s jacket was gone from the back of the dining chair.
Elise’s handbag sat on the console table.
Ava stopped.
Daniel noticed it too.
“Is that hers?”
“Yes.”
They heard movement near the guest hallway.
Elise appeared wearing the same beige dress with a cream cardigan over it.
She froze when she saw Ava.
Daniel moved slightly in front of his sister.
Elise lifted both hands.
“I am not here to fight.”
Ava’s voice remained flat.
“Then why are you here?”
Elise looked toward the ceiling as if remembering the cameras.
“I cannot explain it here.”
Daniel frowned.
“Convenient.”
Elise looked at Ava.
“Check the blue folder in the nursery cabinet.”
Ava’s heart jumped.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
Elise stepped back toward the hallway.
“Please do not say I told you.”
Daniel stared after her.
“What is happening?”
Ava went directly to Nora’s nursery.
The room was bright and untouched, with a white crib beneath a framed print of clouds.
Inside the cabinet where Ava kept vaccination records and warranty papers, she found a blue folder she had never seen before.
It contained copies of bank statements, property correspondence, and emails printed from Grant’s company account.
Several pages showed transfers from a joint investment account into a separate holding company.
The amounts were not enormous individually.
Together, they were significant.
One email mentioned “preparing liquidity before domestic restructuring.”
Ava sat slowly in the nursery chair.
Daniel read over her shoulder.
“This started four months ago.”
Four months ago was when Grant had begun insisting that Ava take a longer maternity leave and let him “handle the complicated finances.”
At the time, it had sounded supportive.
Now it sounded strategic.
Ava took photos of every page.
Then she placed the folder back exactly where she had found it.
Footsteps crossed the living room.
Grant had returned.
His voice carried down the hall.
“Ava?”
Daniel whispered, “Do not react.”
Ava picked up a diaper bag and walked into the main room as if that had been her only purpose.
Grant stood near the entryway.
Elise was several feet away from him.
Grant looked at Daniel with immediate irritation.
“Why is he here?”
“Because I asked him.”
“You do not need an escort in your own home.”
Ava met his eyes.
“Yesterday you told me it was not my home unless I accepted your terms.”
Grant’s mouth tightened.
“That is not what I said.”
Daniel let out a quiet breath that was almost a laugh.
Ava did not smile.
“You said, ‘Accept her or leave.’”
Grant glanced at Elise.
Something passed between them.
It was not affection.
It looked like warning.
Ava understood then that whatever existed between Grant and Elise was more complicated than the picture he had presented.
She lifted the diaper bag.
“I have what I came for.”
Grant stepped into her path.
“We need to talk without your brother and without lawyers.”
“No.”
The answer came quickly enough to surprise all three of them.
Grant lowered his voice.
“You are creating consequences you do not understand.”
Ava held his gaze.
“Maybe.”
Then she looked directly at Elise.
“But I am starting to understand more than you think.”
Elise’s face went pale.
May you like
Grant noticed.
And in that instant, Ava knew he had noticed too.
