Chapter 6 - The Folder Grant Found.

For the next forty-eight hours, the unknown number went silent.

Ava sent no messages.

She checked anyway.

Every hour at first.

Then every few hours.

Nothing.

The absence of contact created a different kind of pressure because it left Ava alone with possibilities.

Maybe Grant had discovered the phone.

Maybe Elise had never been the sender.

Maybe the entire thing was designed to make Ava suspicious and careless.

Rebecca reminded her not to build decisions around assumptions.

“Facts first.”

Ava repeated those words to herself while feeding Nora in Daniel’s kitchen.

Facts first.

Fact one was that the proposed agreement favored Grant.

Fact two was that joint funds had moved.

Fact three was that Elise worked in compliance and had directed Ava to the folder.

Fact four was that Grant knew someone had warned her.

Daniel added another fact.

“Grant just removed you from the family office portal.”

Ava looked up.

“What?”

Daniel turned his laptop around.

He had helped Ava log in several months earlier when she needed a tax document.

Now her credentials showed an access error.

Ava called the family office administrator directly.

The administrator sounded uncomfortable.

“Mrs. Bennett, there was an internal access update this morning.”

“Who requested it?”

A long pause followed.

“I would need authorization to discuss that.”

Ava looked at Rebecca, who was listening on speaker.

Rebecca wrote something on a notepad and held it up to the camera.

ASK FOR WRITTEN CONFIRMATION.

Ava did.

Ten minutes later, an email arrived stating that Grant had requested the change “for account security during a domestic transition.”

Marcus called immediately after reviewing it.

“That email is useful.”

Ava felt no satisfaction.

Only sadness.

“This is really happening.”

“Yes.”

Marcus’s voice softened.

“And now you are documenting it.”

That evening, Grant arrived at Daniel’s building without warning.

The doorman called upstairs.

Daniel looked at Ava.

“You do not have to see him.”

Ava thought for a moment.

“Lobby only.”

She left Nora with Mia and took Daniel with her.

Grant stood near the front windows wearing a dark coat over his suit.

His expression sharpened when he saw Daniel.

“I asked to speak with my wife.”

Daniel stopped several steps away.

“And she asked me to stand here.”

Grant turned to Ava.

“You are embarrassing both of us.”

Ava almost could not believe the sentence.

“You came to my brother’s building without asking.”

“I came because you refuse to communicate.”

“I communicate through counsel when it involves documents and property.”

Grant stepped closer.

“This is about our family.”

Ava lowered her voice.

“Then why did you cut off my financial access?”

Grant froze.

Only for a second.

But she saw it.

“That account is company-related.”

“It includes our tax records.”

“I was protecting confidential information.”

“From your wife?”

“From a person who is being influenced by outsiders.”

Ava thought of the silent unknown number.

“Who are these outsiders you keep mentioning?”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

He looked at Daniel.

“People who do not understand what is at stake.”

Daniel stayed calm.

“Then explain it.”

Grant ignored him.

“Ava, come home tonight.”

“No.”

“Bring Nora.”

“No.”

“Then at least let me see her.”

Ava’s anger flickered because this was the first time in two days that Grant had directly asked about his daughter.

She forced herself to answer carefully.

“We can arrange time tomorrow in a neutral place.”

Grant looked offended by the word neutral.

“She is my child.”

“She is also mine.”

The lobby went quiet around them.

Grant took a slow breath.

“Tomorrow at ten.”

Ava nodded.

“I will confirm through Rebecca.”

He stared at her as if she had become a stranger.

Then he left.

When Ava returned upstairs, Mia was holding Nora near the window.

Ava took her daughter and kissed the top of her head.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket.

Unknown number.

Only one line appeared.

HE FOUND THE BLUE FOLDER.

Ava read the message twice before showing Daniel.

“What does that mean?” he asked.

“It means Grant knows someone put it there.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Does he know you saw it?”

“I do not know.”

The next message answered the question.

HE DOES NOT KNOW IF YOU COPIED IT.

DO NOT TELL HIM.

Ava typed nothing.

She forwarded screenshots to Rebecca and then powered off the phone for an hour.

At ten the next morning, Grant met Ava and Nora in a private family lounge inside a hotel where Rebecca had arranged a quiet room.

Daniel waited in the lobby.

Grant arrived carrying a small stuffed rabbit and a new baby blanket.

The gesture almost looked ordinary.

Ava hated how much she wanted it to be ordinary.

Grant sat across from her and smiled at Nora.

“Hey, sweetheart.”

Nora stared at him, then reached for the rabbit.

Grant’s face softened in a way Ava had not seen in days.

For twenty minutes, they spoke only about the baby.

Nora’s sleep schedule.

Her new food preferences.

A pediatric appointment next week.

Then Grant placed the rabbit on the table and looked at Ava.

“I found something strange at home.”

Ava kept her expression neutral.

“What?”

“A folder in the nursery.”

She let two seconds pass.

“What kind of folder?”

“Company documents.”

Ava shook her head slowly.

“Why were company documents in Nora’s room?”

“That is what I am trying to determine.”

His eyes never left hers.

“Did you see them?”

Ava chose her answer carefully.

“I collected Nora’s things.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Ava’s heart beat faster, but her voice remained calm.

“I am not answering questions about documents while you are sending me legal agreements and restricting my access.”

Grant leaned back.

There it was again.

The tiniest break in control.

“You are listening to Elise.”

Ava said nothing.

Grant realized what he had revealed.

He tried to recover.

“She has been creating confusion at work.”

Ava looked at him directly.

“You told me she was part of your life.”

“She is.”

“In what way?”

Grant looked toward Nora.

“That is complicated.”

Ava almost laughed.

“Yesterday it was simple enough to tell me to accept her or leave.”

Grant lowered his voice.

“I needed you out of the penthouse for a few days.”

The admission hit harder than Ava expected.

“So the ultimatum was planned?”

“No.”

“You just said you needed me out.”

“I needed space to handle a company matter.”

“And Elise had to stay there?”

“She needed access to records.”

Ava’s mind moved quickly.

Elise was not simply another woman.

At least not in the way Grant had implied.

He had used that implication because he knew it would drive Ava out.

The humiliation had been a tool.

That realization was somehow worse than jealousy.

“You let me believe you were replacing me.”

Grant’s expression shifted.

“I never said that.”

“You did not have to.”

Ava stood and lifted Nora.

Grant rose too.

“Ava, listen to me.”

“No.”

“You do not understand what Elise is involved in.”

“Then explain it.”

He stopped.

He could not.

Or would not.

Ava picked up the diaper bag.

“I will not be manipulated out of my own home so you can manage some secret crisis.”

Grant’s voice sharpened.

“If you go digging into things you do not understand, you could damage everything we built.”

Ava faced him.

“What did we build, Grant?”

He had no answer that did not sound like ownership.

Ava left the room.

In the elevator, her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

MEET ME TONIGHT.

ALONE.

A location followed.

It was a twenty-four-hour coffee shop three blocks from the penthouse.

May you like

Then one more message appeared.

IF I DO NOT TELL YOU NOW, HE WILL CONTROL THE STORY.
