Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Lied.

Lorenzo removed the chain from beneath his shirt and held the small black vault key in his fist.

Adrian stared at it for one heartbeat too long.

Celeste noticed.

So did Marcus.

“What is in the vault?” Evelyn asked.

Lorenzo did not answer immediately.

The vault sat behind the library wall and contained the controlling documents for DeLuca Holdings.

It also contained a sealed file his late wife, Isabelle, had given him three days before she died.

He had never opened that file.

Grief had made the envelope feel radioactive.

Adrian knew about the vault because the brothers had built the house together after their father died.

He was never supposed to know the key had been moved to Lorenzo’s necklace.

Lorenzo turned to Celeste.

“Who told you about this?”

“I never knew what the key opened.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Celeste’s tears finally fell.

“The voice on the phone never used a name.”

“You met someone in the service passage.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“I couldn’t see his face.”

Adrian laughed once.

“How convenient.”

Celeste spun toward him.

“You think this is funny?”

“I think you are trying to save yourself.”

“I am trying to save my brother.”

“You drugged Lorenzo.”

“You told me—”

Celeste stopped.

The silence was immediate.

Adrian’s expression changed.

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.

“What did Adrian tell you?”

Celeste shook her head.

“I misspoke.”

“No.”

Lorenzo stepped closer.

“You finally spoke clearly.”

Adrian rose again.

“This is absurd.”

Mia began to cry.

The sound cut through Lorenzo’s anger faster than any threat could.

He turned immediately and lifted her into his arms.

She buried her face against his neck.

“I want Mommy.”

The words hit him like a blade.

Isabelle had been gone for two years.

Mia still asked for her when she was frightened.

Celeste looked away.

Adrian did not.

Lorenzo saw no grief on his brother’s face.

Only calculation.

“Marcus,” Lorenzo said.

“Take Mia to the nursery and put two guards outside the door.”

Mia clung tighter.

“No.”

Lorenzo kissed her forehead.

“I’ll be right downstairs.”

She shook her head violently.

“The ring man comes upstairs.”

Adrian’s face went blank.

Lorenzo slowly turned.

“What did she say?”

Mia pointed at Adrian’s hand.

“The ring man.”

Adrian looked down at the DeLuca crest.

“Mia, sweetheart, Uncle Adrian always wears this.”

She hid her face again.

Lorenzo’s voice dropped.

“Did you see Uncle Adrian in the hallway?”

Mia peeked over his shoulder.

“No.”

Adrian exhaled.

Then Mia whispered, “Same ring.”

Lorenzo frowned.

Not Adrian.

Someone wearing the same ring.

Only family members possessed official DeLuca signets.

Lorenzo had one.

Adrian had one.

Their father’s ring had been buried with him.

Or so Lorenzo had believed.

Marcus’s radio suddenly crackled.

A guard’s voice burst through the speaker.

“Mr. Hale, we have a problem upstairs.”

Marcus grabbed the radio.

“What problem?”

“The nursery door is open.”

Lorenzo looked down at Mia in his arms.

The guard continued.

“Someone was already inside.”

May you like

On Mia’s pillow, they had found a black velvet box.

Inside it rested their dead father’s signet ring.
