Chapter 6 - The Man Behind the Door.

Lorenzo carried Mia upstairs himself.
No one was allowed ahead of him except Marcus.
The nursery door stood open beneath a row of painted gold stars.
Two security guards waited outside looking ashamed and confused.
“We checked the room ten minutes before lockdown,” one of them said.
“It was empty.”
“Then how did the box get on her pillow?” Lorenzo asked.
Neither guard had an answer.
Marcus moved through the nursery with a flashlight despite the lights being on.
He checked beneath the bed, behind the curtains, inside the wardrobe, and along the balcony doors.
There was no intruder.
Only the black velvet box on the pillow.
Lorenzo placed Mia on the window seat and opened it with a handkerchief.
His father’s ring lay inside.
He knew every scratch on the black stone.
He had watched that ring disappear beneath cemetery soil twelve years earlier.
Adrian entered behind them despite being told to remain downstairs.
Lorenzo turned instantly.
“I told you to stay in the dining room.”
“You expect me to sit quietly after someone digs up our father’s grave?”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“You already know where the ring came from?”
Adrian’s expression tightened.
Lorenzo had never said the ring was from the grave.
Marcus slowly turned toward Adrian.
Celeste appeared at the end of the hall with Evelyn beside her.
The house had become a stage where everyone was forgetting which lies they had already told.
Adrian recovered first.
“Where else would it come from?”
“Our mother kept several pieces of his jewelry.”
“Not that ring.”
“You sound very certain.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“Because I was there when he was buried.”
“So was I.”
Mia slid off the window seat.
She walked toward the nursery dollhouse and opened the tiny front door.
“Man went there.”
Marcus crouched beside her.
“Where, Mia?”
She pointed through the dollhouse doorway toward the real bedroom door.
Then she moved her finger to the wall opposite the bed.
“There.”
Lorenzo followed the direction.
A tall bookcase covered most of that wall.
It had been installed before Mia was born.
Marcus pushed against it.
Nothing happened.
Lorenzo remembered something from childhood.
His father had loved hidden compartments.
He stepped to the left edge and pressed a carved wooden rose near the molding.
A faint mechanical click sounded.
The entire bookcase shifted forward half an inch.
Celeste gasped.
Adrian said nothing.
Lorenzo pulled the shelf outward.
A narrow service corridor appeared behind it.
Dust coated most of the floor.
But not all of it.
Fresh shoe prints crossed the dust toward the western stairs.
Marcus shined his light along the wall.
A black wire had been taped beneath the baseboard.
It led to a tiny repeater device connected to the estate network.
“That’s how someone killed the camera remotely,” Marcus said.
Lorenzo looked down the dark passage.
The hidden corridor connected the nursery, the study, and the old wine cellar.
Someone had been moving through the house without appearing on a single hallway camera.
Mia suddenly grabbed his hand.
“Daddy.”
She pointed into the darkness.
A door at the far end slowly moved.
Marcus drew his weapon.
“Stay back.”
He advanced with one guard while Lorenzo shielded Mia behind him.
They reached the far door and ripped it open.
No one stood there.
But a phone lay on the floor, its screen glowing.
An audio recording was playing.
Lorenzo recognized the voice immediately.
May you like
It belonged to his dead wife.
“If you are hearing this,” Isabelle said, “then Adrian found the vault.”
