Chapter 11 - The Message at 2:13 A.M.

Nora's first instinct was to rush outside.

Adrian stepped between her and the entrance without touching her.

"Look at the picture carefully."

Nora forced herself to stop.

The image showed Paige near a marked car outside an office building.

She was speaking to a uniformed officer.

Nothing suggested she was under arrest.

Nothing even suggested the photograph had been taken that day.

"He wants me scared enough not to think," Nora said.

Adrian nodded.

"Then think."

Lena called Paige immediately.

This time Paige answered.

"I am fine," she said.

Nora closed her eyes in relief.

"Where are you?"

"At my sister's apartment."

Lena asked about the photograph.

Paige went quiet.

"That was last November."

"Why were you with the police?"

"Someone hit my parked car during an event."

Nora almost laughed from the absurdity of it.

Caleb had taken an ordinary old image and turned it into a threat because he expected Nora to supply the terrifying details herself.

She looked through the glass again.

Caleb was gone.

Only the reflection of the lobby remained.

"He is losing control," Thomas said.

Nora looked at her father.

"No."

She had learned too much in forty-eight hours to mistake desperation for defeat.

"He is changing tactics."

That night, Nora returned to the guest suite while Lena prepared requests for the Northline archive.

Adrian's security team changed her phone number and helped her recover one personal email account through identity verification.

At 2:13 a.m., a message appeared in the newly restored inbox.

The sender was Caleb.

The subject line read ONLY YOU CAN END THIS.

Nora opened it with Lena on speakerphone.

Caleb's email sounded reasonable.

He wrote that lawyers were escalating a private misunderstanding.

He said Paige had manipulated Nora because she feared losing her job.

He said Vivian was devastated.

He said the financial structure had always been intended to protect Nora.

Then came the final paragraph.

If Nora met Caleb alone for ten minutes and signed a corrected statement, Hartwell would restore access to her accounts, issue a public clarification, and end all claims against Paige.

Nora read the paragraph aloud.

Lena was silent for a beat.

"He just put leverage in writing."

"He thinks he is offering a solution."

"That is because people like Caleb rename pressure until it sounds polite."

Nora forwarded the message to Lena through the preserved process she had been instructed to use.

Then another email arrived.

This one came from an address she did not recognize.

The subject line was YOUR OLD COMPUTER.

There was no message body.

Only one attached photograph.

Nora opened it.

Her silver laptop sat on a metal table.

A small digital clock beside it showed the current date and time.

Behind the laptop was a wall of storage cages.

The photograph had been taken minutes earlier.

Someone had reached the off-site archive despite the hold.

Nora zoomed in.

A hand was visible at the edge of the frame.

On one finger was a distinctive square onyx ring.

Nora had seen that ring hundreds of times.

May you like

It did not belong to Caleb.

It belonged to Vivian Hartwell.
