Chapter 12 - When the Calm Man Stood Up

By sunrise, the Northline situation had become a legal emergency.

The storage company denied allowing Vivian access after the hold was placed.

Their overnight manager insisted no Hartwell representative had entered the secured archive.

The photograph suggested otherwise.

Lena requested entry logs and exterior camera footage immediately.

Adrian said very little while the calls were made.

Nora noticed he became quieter whenever he was angry.

At eight in the morning, Marcus entered the office with a printed visitor log obtained by Northline's attorney.

Vivian's name was not on it.

Neither was Caleb's.

One entry stood out.

Martin Hale.

Nora recognized the name as Hartwell Events' longtime security director.

He had attended every major gala and always carried himself like the room belonged to him.

"Can he access archives for the company?" Lena asked Paige over video call.

"Yes."

Paige looked unsettled.

"He manages emergency retrievals."

Nora thought about the photograph again.

"Then Vivian may not have taken it herself."

Adrian finally spoke.

"But whoever took it wanted you to see her ring."

Nora looked at him.

"You think it was staged?"

"I think every detail Caleb sends you is selected for a reason."

The possibility was worse than the photograph itself.

Caleb might want Nora to accuse Vivian publicly before the facts were clear.

If Nora overreached, Hartwell could call her reckless.

Lena nodded slowly.

"We verify before we accuse anyone."

Nora walked toward the window.

"How do they keep staying ahead of us?"

Paige answered from the screen.

"Because somebody knows what we are doing."

The room went silent.

Nora turned.

Adrian's five bodyguards had been with them at different times.

Lena's staff knew about the filing.

Thomas knew about the evidence.

Paige knew nearly everything.

The circle was no longer small.

Adrian stood.

It was the first time Nora had seen him move with real urgency.

"Marcus, collect every guest network access log from the last forty-eight hours."

Marcus nodded.

"And nobody uses the Meridian conference Wi-Fi until we know more."

Nora's borrowed phone suddenly felt heavy in her hand.

"You think they hacked the club?"

"I think we stop assuming anything."

Daniel Cho arrived an hour later and examined the devices used during their meetings.

The result came quickly.

Paige's laptop contained remote-management software installed through a fake Hartwell update weeks earlier.

The program could copy files and capture portions of her screen.

Paige went pale.

"They have seen everything I opened?"

"Possibly."

Nora remembered the hidden-room photograph Paige had shown them.

She remembered the Northline vendor spreadsheet.

That was how Caleb knew they had discovered the backup.

Paige covered her face with both hands.

"I led them to it."

"No," Nora said.

Paige looked up.

"They put the software on your computer before you knew what was happening."

For once, Nora refused to let another person carry blame that belonged elsewhere.

Daniel disconnected the laptop.

Then he frowned at the network log Marcus had brought him.

"There is another device I want to see."

Adrian looked over his shoulder.

"Which one?"

Daniel pointed to a recurring connection registered under the name AV-GUEST-02.

The device had been present during every private meeting.

Adrian's face became completely still.

"That is not one of mine."

May you like

The signal was active now.

And according to the access point map, the device was somewhere inside the Meridian.
