Chapter 13 - The Booth Was Never Empty

The Meridian closed every public floor while Adrian's security team searched for the unknown device.

Nobody panicked.

Nobody ran through hallways.

The calm made the situation feel more serious.

Nora stayed with Lena, Paige, and Thomas in Adrian's office while Marcus checked the VIP level room by room.

Daniel watched the device signal move between access points.

"It is not stationary," he said.

Adrian looked at the map.

"Someone is carrying it."

The signal moved from the lower bar to the private corridor.

Then it stopped.

Directly beneath Adrian's office.

Marcus's voice came through the radio.

"We have one person in the service hallway."

Nora held her breath.

A few minutes later, the office door opened.

Marcus entered with a young bartender named Evan.

Nora recognized him from the night she ran into the VIP booth.

He looked terrified.

Adrian did not threaten him.

He simply asked one question.

"What did Caleb give you?"

Evan's face collapsed.

"I did not know what it was."

He removed a black power bank from his apron.

Daniel took it and opened the casing.

Inside was a small network relay device.

"He told me it measured signal strength," Evan said.

"He paid me two hundred dollars to keep it charged near the VIP floor."

Adrian's expression remained controlled.

"When?"

"Three weeks ago."

Nora stared at him.

Three weeks.

Caleb had prepared access to the Meridian before Nora ever ran there.

"Why this club?" she asked.

Evan shook his head.

"He never told me."

Adrian looked at Nora.

Both understood the same thing at once.

Caleb had expected a confrontation at the Meridian.

The private dinner upstairs had not been chosen randomly.

He had chosen a place where he believed he could monitor what happened if Nora resisted.

The only part he had not planned was Nora choosing Adrian's booth.

Daniel isolated the relay and found cached connection data.

It had attempted to send encrypted packets to a remote server every few minutes.

Lena asked whether the contents could be recovered.

"Some metadata, maybe more."

Daniel worked for almost an hour.

Then he found a directory of captured file names.

One name froze Nora in place.

BENNETT_SETTLEMENT_FINAL.DOCX.

"Settlement?" Thomas said.

Nora had never seen a settlement document.

Lena had never drafted one.

Daniel located a partial cached copy.

The document was dated the following day.

It stated that Nora had reached a confidential resolution with Hartwell Events, acknowledged misunderstanding several transactions, and agreed not to pursue further claims.

At the bottom was a prepared line for an electronic signature.

Nora's name was already typed there.

"They expected me to sign this tomorrow," she said.

Lena shook her head.

"Or they expected to claim you did."

The possibility landed heavily.

Adrian's phone rang.

He checked the number and put it on speaker.

Caleb's voice filled the room.

"Adrian."

"Caleb."

"You found my little insurance policy."

Nobody moved.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"You are admitting the device is yours?"

Caleb laughed softly.

"I am admitting nothing."

Then his voice changed.

"Put Nora on."

Nora stepped closer.

"I am here."

Caleb paused.

"You keep choosing strangers over people who know you."

Nora looked at Adrian, Lena, Paige, and her father.

"No."

Her voice was steadier than it had been two nights earlier.

"I am choosing people who let me answer for myself."

Caleb went silent.

Then he delivered the sentence he had clearly been saving.

"Ask Adrian why he already knew your name before you landed in his lap."

The call ended.

May you like

Nora slowly turned toward Adrian.

For the first time since that first night, he looked like a man who had hoped one particular truth would stay buried longer.
