Chapter 1: The Sirens Don’t Lie

The sirens cut through the silence like a blade.

For the first time since the chaos began, people moved—but not toward Sophie. They stepped back. Away. As if guilt were contagious.

Two paramedics rushed in, their calm professionalism slicing through the room’s cruelty. One knelt beside me. “Ma’am, we’ve got her.”

I didn’t want to let go.

Sophie’s small fingers were still wrapped around mine, weak but desperate. “Mommy…” she whispered again.

“I’m right here, baby. I’m right here.”

They placed her on the stretcher, pressing gauze against her head. Blood soaked through too quickly.

Behind me, I heard my father already speaking to someone. “This is being blown out of proportion. It was an accident—”

“Save it,” I snapped, not even turning around.

Then the police entered.

And everything changed.

One officer looked at the stretcher. Another looked at Preston.

“Who caused the injury?”

The room held its breath.

Before anyone else could speak, I said it clearly:

“He did.”

Preston laughed.

Actually laughed.

“You’re really doing this?” he said. “In front of everyone?”

I stood up slowly, my hands still stained with my daughter’s blood.

“No,” I said. “I’m just getting started.”

And then I pointed.

“Check the security cameras.”

For the first time that night, Preston didn’t have a response.
