Chapter 1: The Outcast in Green

The crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the Grand Atrium ballroom.
Waiters in crisp white tuxedos wove silently through the sea of silk and satin.
It was the wedding of the season, a gathering of the city's most elite families.
At the center of it all was Chloe, radiating ambition in a floor-length light gold silk cowl-neck gown.
Her diamond earrings caught the light every time she tossed her carefully styled blonde hair.
She considered herself the unofficial queen of the evening, judging everyone who walked through the gilded doors.
Her eyes darted around the room, making mental notes of who wore designer labels and who wore last season's leftovers.
Then, she spotted something that deeply offended her delicate sensibilities.
Seated alone at a small table near the back was an older woman.
She completely broke the dress code of the glamorous evening.
The woman was not wearing a sweeping ballgown or dripping in heavy diamonds.
Instead, she wore a tailored dark emerald green double-breasted suit.
Her short blonde hair was neatly styled, but lacked the extravagant flair expected at such a high-society event.
Resting on the pristine white tablecloth in front of her was a structured burgundy leather handbag.
Chloe narrowed her eyes, her perfectly painted lips curling into a sneer of absolute disgust.
How did a nobody manage to slip past the venue's tight security?
She marched over to her friend, the bride, who was greeting guests near an elaborate ice sculpture.
"Sarah, who is that woman at table twelve?"
Chloe pointed a manicured finger toward the woman in the green suit.
Sarah glanced over, a look of mild confusion crossing her stressed face.
"I am not entirely sure, to be honest."
"My wedding planner handled the overflow guest list and corporate sponsors."
Chloe scoffed loudly, adjusting the elegant drape of her expensive silk gown.
"She looks like she wandered in off the street to steal the hors d'oeuvres."
"I will handle this immediately."
"You should not have to deal with pathetic party crashers on your special day."
Sarah reached out gently, looking highly anxious about the brewing conflict.
"Chloe, maybe you should just leave her alone."
"She is not bothering anyone by just sitting there."
Chloe ignored the plea, her mind already made up and hungry for drama.
She loved wielding power, especially over those she deemed socially inferior.
Her expensive heels clicked sharply against the polished marble floor as she quickly closed the distance.
The older woman was calmly sipping water, seemingly unaware of the impending storm approaching her table.
She exuded a quiet dignity that strangely only irritated Chloe further.
Poverty, in Chloe's heavily prejudiced eyes, was a disease that had no place in this luxurious hall.
She stopped right in front of the table, crossing her arms in a defensive, aggressive posture.
The older woman slowly looked up, her expression incredibly mild and unbothered.
She did not flinch beneath Chloe's harsh, intensely judgmental glare.
This distinct lack of intimidation was the final straw for the arrogant younger woman.
Chloe took a deep breath, preparing to tear the stranger down.
The music swelled as the string quartet began a new, lively movement.
It provided an elegant, ironic soundtrack to the incredibly ugly scene about to unfold.
Chloe looked down her nose at the older woman, taking in the simple, unadorned fabric of her green trousers.
She noted the distinct lack of heavy jewelry on the woman's neck and wrists.
To Chloe, these were undeniable signs of financial failure and low breeding.
"Excuse me."
Chloe began, her voice dripping with artificial, toxic sweetness.
The older woman set her crystal water glass down gracefully.
"Yes?"
"May I help you, young lady?"
The calm, remarkably even tone of the woman's voice felt like a direct insult.
Chloe dropped the fake smile, letting her true, vicious contempt show plainly on her face.
"The real question is whether you can help yourself find the nearest exit."
"This is a private, highly exclusive wedding event for respectable people."
"It is not a charity soup kitchen for anyone who manages to sneak past the velvet ropes."
The older woman simply blinked, her hands resting patiently near her burgundy bag.
She did not raise her voice, nor did she show a single hint of embarrassment.
"I assure you, I was invited to be here tonight."

Chloe let out a harsh, mocking laugh that immediately drew the attention of nearby guests.
"Invited?"
"By whom exactly?"
"You do not even have the basic decency to dress appropriately for a black-tie wedding."
"You are making the real guests incredibly uncomfortable just by breathing the same air."
People at the surrounding tables stopped eating and began to whisper.
Even Sarah, the bride in the white dress, looked over with a deeply horrified expression.
May you like
But Chloe was completely blind to everything except her own inflated sense of superiority.
She leaned in closer, determined to humiliate the older woman in front of the entire room.
